2. Good writers use a variety of sentence types and lengths to make their writing interesting. • A simple sentence has one or more subjects and one or more predicates. • A compound sentences is made up of two ro more simple sentences joined by a coordinating conjunction: and, or, or but.

3. He tried to run off, lost his balance, and fell down. He got up again, but this time the farmer took his arm and helped him to the truck. The simple sentence in the chart has one subject, man, and one predicate, opened. Two predicates in the 2nd sentences: looked and jumped.

4. A pourquoi tale is a type o story told to explain why natural events, such as the changing o the seasons, occur. • Pourquoi is the French word for why.

5. Complex sentences have an independent clause, such as “no bare branches would be seen, and a dependent clause, such as “When winter came.” Dependent clauses begin with connecting words, such as if, when, or because. The Squirrel moved into the forest, and she brought her hungry family. They found many beech nuts on the ground, but they ate them all. Long ago, the beech tree kept the leaves all year long. Squirrel knew there were more nuts in the trees. She thought the nuts would be easier to find if the branches were bare.

6. Writing Prompt: Think about the hills, lakes, or other geographic features of your area. Choose one of these geographic features and write a pourquoi tale that explains why or how they were formed. • Many pourquoi tales, a character faces a conflict, or problem, in the beginning of the story. • A conflict should be resolved through a series of events by the end of the story.

8. Peer Conference Checklist • Are the characters, setting, and conflict in the introduction? • Does the tale explain how something natural came to be? • Has the writer used a variety of sentence types and lengths? • Has the writer proofread for errors in grammar and spelling? • Do all the pronouns have clear antecedents?
