  2. `THE DINNER` 2 • Each year the NHL Alumni Association recognizes stars from the past and present, and friends of our hockey family, for their outstanding contribution to hockey, both on and off the ice. • The NHL Alumni Awards Gala Dinner is a memorable annual occasion of 600 guests,when the entire NHL family – teams, players, Alumni, NHL, NHLPA, league officials, sponsors and supporters gather to honour our NHL Alumni Award recipients.

NHL ALUMNI “MAN OF THE YEAR” 3 The “NHL Alumni `Man of the Year` is awarded to a former player who has applied the intangibles of perseverance, commitment and teamwork developed through the game into a successful post-career transition. This person is an ambassador for the game at all levels through his continued commitment in community and charitable causes.   4. KEITH MCCREARY ‘7TH MAN AWARD’ 4 The NHL Alumni recognizes a member of the NHL family who has contributed behind the scenes for a significant period of time. This Award, on behalf of the NHL Alumni, gives praise to the individual that has been a consummate professional at his/her job every night. This Award is named in honor and memory of Keith McCreary, Chairman of the NHL Alumni Association who passed away December 9, 2003. This Award is named in honor and memory of Garnet ‘Ace’ Bailey, a former NHL’er who passed in the September 11 tragedy.   7. `MAN OF THE YEAR` – PAT QUINN 7 • Playing career 1963–1977 • John Brian Patrick Quinn (born January 29, 1943), is a former head coach in the National Hockey League (NHL), most recently with the Edmonton Oilers. Known by the nickname “The Big Irishman”, he has also coached for the Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals twice with the Flyers in 1980 and the Canucks in 1994. Internationally, Quinn has coached Team Canada to gold medals at the 2002 Winter Olympics, 2008 IIHF World U18 Championships and 2009 World Junior Championship, as well as World Cup Championship in 2004. • Prior to coaching, Quinn was an NHL defenseman, having played nine seasons in the League with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks and Atlanta Flames. Coming out of the junior ranks with the Edmonton Oil Kings, he won a Memorial Cup with the club in 1963. He later won another Memorial Cup as part-owner of the Vancouver Giants in 2007.

  8. KEITH MCCREARY `7TH MAN` – RUSS CONWAY 8 • Russ Conway was an associate editor and long-time sports columnist with the Eagle-Tribune. He brought distinction to the Eagle-Tribune and its sports pages since joining the newspaper in 1967. He built a reputation as one of North America’s foremost hockey writers with his insightful coverage of the National Hockey League and the Boston Bruins. • He has won several major journalism awards, including being named a finalist for the 1992 beat reporting Pulitzer Prize for his collective investigative work that disclosed unlawful practices by the then-head of the NHL Players’ Association, Alan Eagleson. • Russ was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as the 1999 recipient of the Elmer Ferguson Memorial Award as selected by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. He was also voted into the New England Auto Racing Hall of Fame. • In 2004, a combined initiative—spearheaded by Hall of Fame hockey writer Russ Conway; former players, Pat Flatley, Ted Lindsay, Jean Beliveau, Bobby Orr, Glenn Healy and the NHL Alumni Association – helped create a fund to compensate over 300 NHL Alumni Members 65 years and older. The National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players’ Association each contributed $1million, meaning over the course of the following four years, those former players received $1,380 annually for every season they played. In 2007, the NHL and the NHLPA doubled their contributions to $2million each which commenced in 2008. • Russ’s contribution to the game and players of hockey has been undeniably a test of his consummate support of the players and the fans!
