  1. The Bacher Blog For parents of students in Room 16 Mon., Nov. 15, 2010 • Important Announcements: • Student Council is collecting canned goods and non-perishable items for the military. Please send items in with your child if you are able to! Thank you! • Please help to make sure your child is coming to school dressed appropriately for the weather so he/she is warm enough at outside recess. • You should have received an invite to the Thanksgiving Poetry Presentation and Bread Party (printed on blue paper). Please complete the bottom portion and return it to me by this Friday. • No school next Wednesday – Friday!!! Fundations: This week we will continue to explore vowel-consonant-e syllables that make long vowel sounds. We will also review letters that make the /z/ sound, we’ll build multisyllabic words that follow the vowel-consonant-e pattern, and we’ll learn the v-e exception (-ive). Our unit test will not be until Nov. 23rd. • Homework: • Lucky Listener Log: EVERY NIGHT!!! Your child is getting his/her Thanksgiving poem. Not everyone has the samepoem! These are the poems that will be presented on Nov. 23rd at our poetry reading! • Rainbow Write the trick words due Fri. • Math Log: EVERY NIGHT!!! • Mon. – Practice +/- facts 10 min. Tues. – Choice • Wed. – Home Links 4-1 Thurs. – Home Links 4-2 • Fri. – Choice • Unit 6 Fundations packet: It will be collected Nov. 23rd. Everyday Math We will have our Unit 3 test on Tuesday, and we’ll jump right into Unit 4 on Wednesday. Family Letters for Unit 4 will be sent home Tuesday night. Be sure to keep that in a safe spot! The Daily 5/CAFÉ time: We are continuing to add strategies to our CAFÉ menu. Some of the strategies we’ve been practicing for awhile now…we just haven’t realized it. With Fundations we are really putting Flip the Sound to good use. We hold our hand up and say the word (v-e syllable) with a long sound. Then we flip our hand to make a short vowel sound and practice spelling that word. For example, cape has a long a sound, and cap has the short a sound. Many of my students are flipping the sound when they read to try to figure out the word they are stuck on! In writing/English, we are really trying to work on using capitalization and punctuation. By now we know the rules for capitalization and the different types of punctuation. Most of my students have demonstrated that they can self-correct and use these skills properly. I encourage you to have them use these skills at home when they write as well. We are now beginning to talk more about sentences – that sentences are made up of a subject (noun) and predicate (verb). I hope to begin moving into more paragraph writing after Thanksgiving. Some of my students are still conferencing with me about their monster stories from early last week. We will also be conferencing about the Veteran poems from Friday. Science/Social Studies: Last week we read both a fiction and nonfiction book about Veteran’s Day. We have a better understanding of what veterans are and how Veteran’s Day came to be. We also read about the life cycle of monarch butterflies. This week we will be making a life cycle mobile. Book It: Book It forms for November will be collected on December 1. It’s an easy and fun way for your child to earn a free pizza! Recommended Website: www.321know.com * This gives additional information on various subjects for any grade levels. I just recently came across it, and I’m still looking through it. It might be helpful to you, just as much as it could be to your child! Enjoy! THANK YOU... To the Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Nista for their help with Math Lab last week – it was appreciated!!!
