AIDS related illnesses are the 6th leading cause of death among people between 15 - 24 AIDS is the leading cause of death for African Americans ages 25 - 44 About 40 million children world wide will have lost their parents to AIDS by 2010
At the end of 2006: • Worldwide: • 40 million people living with HIV or AIDS • 4.3 million new infections per year • This equals: • 14,000 new infections daily or 600 infections every hour • Every minute 6 people between the ages of 10 - 25 are infected with HIV and over 1/2 of all new infections. • HIV/AIDS is a "disease of young people" with half of the 5 million new infections each year occurring among people ages 15 to 24. 74 % of the above are in Africa
In the US through 2005: • 956,019 people infected with AIDS with another 25% undiagnosed and unaware of their HIV infection. • 769,635 cases in males • 186,383 cases in females • 9441 in children under the age of 13 • Ages 15 - 19 is 5,289 • Ages 20 - 24 is 34,795
In Missouri through 2005: • 10,630 HIV/AIDS cases • 9466 are in males • 1164 are in females
In St. Louis through 2005 • 6,616 AIDS / HIV case • About 3000 in the city • 4508 are diagnosed AIDS (1/2 of them have died) • 2108 are HIV positive
In Kirkwood as of 2003: • 61 cases of AIDS • 32 reported cases of HIV
