  1. Animal Farm Chapters 9 & 10

  2. Chapter 9 What is happening to Boxer? (Group 5) What are living conditions like for all of the animals except the pigs and dogs? (Group 6) Why does Napoleon allow Moses to return and to tell his stories about Sugarcandy Mountain? (Group 1) What happens to Boxer? How do the animals accept it? (Group 2) Of what kind of person does Benjamin remind you? Give some examples. (Group 3) Make a prediction about Napoleon’s fate as a leader. (Group 4)

  3. Literary Element Paradox - an apparent contradiction that suggests the truth Example: “I can resist anything but temptation.” Oscar Wilde Example: "War is peace.""Freedom is slavery.""Ignorance is strength."(George Orwell, 1984) Example from Animal Farm: Pages 117-118

  4. Chapter 10 What changes have the years brought to the farm? How does Orwell make fun of bureaucracy? How do the animals now feel about their social order, their farm? What drastic action do the pigs use to shatter the animals’ complacency? (How do the pigs change?) All seven commandments are erased. What is the new commandment and how has it been true from the beginning? At the conference with the neighboring farms, what new changes does Napoleon point out? What happens to the pigs’ appearance from the perspective of the other animals?

  5. Literary Elements Paradox:

  6. Throughout the book, Benjamin the donkey has been “morose and taciturn.” He speaks very little, and when he does, it is often to make an intelligent but negative observation. He felt that life never changes. He may have said something like, “You work hard, get too little to eat, and then you die.” At the end, as he reads the last change to the Seven Commandments, “All animals are equal but some are more equal than others,” he might have said something like, “What goes around comes around.” What would he mean by this? Can you think of parallels to this idea in today’s world?
