  3. What is data ? At the heart of every computer there is a very simple fact, they only understand two states, on and off, represented by ‘1’ and ‘0’, and this is the data that we are talking about 1’s and 0’s This switching between states is carried out by the electronic components within the device, primarily the processor, and the switches are called transistors. It is the advances in the number of switches or transistors a processor can manage which has led to the huge growth in the computer industry. From 2,300 transistors on Intel’s first processor to over 7,000,000,000 on some processors today.

  7. Where is this all done? Data Centres Can require power in excess of 200MW, that’s enough to run a city of 500,000 people These facilities are often more than 100,000 sq m in size

  8. What is important? • Availability • Energy Efficiency • Reliability • Resilience • To keep these facilities operating at their best, we need to gather data about them. • Measuring and monitoring everything that happens in a data centre is the key to providing the services we use.

Conclusion • In todays world, just about everything we do generates data. • That data is stored in Data Centres • We totally rely on this information, so the facilities must be properly maintained and managed • Measuring and monitoring systems to gather facility data is at the heart of every Data Centre
