SYNOPSIS OF FILM • A 17 year old girl, named Penelope (aka Pen) has been receiving letters from a friend she met in a psyche ward called Ash, a 19 year old reckless soul. • Her parent's relationship is unstable with both blaming the other for their child turning out so unhinged, which Pen realises. • Ash and Pen run away together to the coast where they travel to the South of France where Ash ropes Pen into killing 2 people. It is a Bonnie and Clyde/ Bad Lands situation. • At the end, it turns out that Pen was manipulated and was blinded by his fake love. She is framed and put in prison. • On the court hearing, we see flashbacks to the police raiding his caravan and finding a letter revealing all. The genre of the film would be an adventure, thriller, mystery with a coming-of-age aspect. Despite this, we wouldn’t stick to the typical codes and conventions of a thriller opening sequence.​ We would like to portray these dark issues with a contrast to light mise en scene and a teenager's point of view.

  3. SYNOPSIS OF OPENING SEQUENCE • Penelope arrives back home from the psyche ward with a cardboard box filled with her old items. She looks around, pauses and dumps the box on her bed. • She heads towards her record player, turns it on and looks in the mirror making a twisted smile. She distorts her face with her hands and mouths the opening lyrics of the song. • She sees a letter in the reflection and walks towards it in time with the music. She picks up the letter and jumps with glee and collapses on her bed. • She finds a letter on her desk and her window half way open. • During this, we see flashbacks to Ash writing the letter with a non-diegetic narrative of him reading it out loud. THEMES: Manipulation, 60s, coming of age, love, Wes Anderson style, the British Invasion, psychological, thriller, mental health, drugs and music.

  10. CHARACTERISTIC BRIEFS - PENELOPE Appearance: • Penelope aka Pen is a 17-year-old English girl living in 1969. She is naturally beautiful (and she knows it) but puts on quirky eye makeup to express herself. Despite this, she really doesn’t care how she looks and would throw on any old thing. Character/Personality: • Penelope has a ‘takes no prisoners’ personality regarding her parents or friends, APART FROM ASH. She expresses a special interest in Ash an older mysterious boy. She finds his lack-lustre personality intriguing and interesting. She finds comfort in him as he doesn’t stick to social norms and has been through grief and pain. In the Opening Sequence, we see a glimpse of Pen’s vulnerability despite the ‘brave’ face and ‘carefree’ mask she puts on, creating an availability for Ash to manipulate and overpower her.

  11. CHARACTERISTIC BRIEFS - ASH Appearance: • Ash is a 19-year-old boy that has struggled throughout his childhood financially and mentally. At a glance, Ash is unconventionally attractive with a strong bone structure and gaunt face but in particular, has very striking eyes. He looks as if he is always observing and calculating plans and thoughts. Ash and Pen disturbingly share the same fake grin that is a mask for society. Character/Personality: • Ash has been in and out of foster homes many times but now is finding temporary lodgings as he is now an adult. He is charming and infatuating with his use of words but is extremely mysterious with only some people plucking up the courage to talk to him. Despite his initial wit and charm, deep down, Ash is a twisted and manipulative person who seeks to exploit the vulnerability of others.
