  3. Commutative Properties of Addition and Multiplication – Changing the order of the values you are adding or multiplying does not change the sum or product. Associative Properties of Addition and Multiplication – Changing the grouping of the values you are adding or multiplying does not change the sum or product. Identity Properties of Addition and Multiplication – The sum of any number and zero is the original number. The product of any number and 1 is the original number.

  4. R21 9-19-13 What does EVALUATE mean? Simplify: 3x2 + 5x + 2(4x2 - 2) + 12 A. 16x2 + 8 B. 16x + 8 C. 11x2 + 5x + 8 D. 11x2 + 5x + 16

  5. R21 9-19-13 PROPERTIES FOLDABLE Handout

  6. L21 9-19-13 For each question determine if the expressions are equivalent. If they are equivalent, give a property that allows you to make this conclusion. If they are not equivalent, substitute a value for the variable to show that the two expressions are not equivalent. 5. Is -5(c - d) equivalent to -5c + 5d

  7. L21 9-19-13 Reflections: How can your knowledge of number properties help you simplify variable expressions? For example: 3(-6) = (-6)(3) Commutative Property

  9. KABOOM!!! Evaluating Expressions

  10. RULES Groups of 3 to 4 students. Each student works the problem on their paper independently. Share your answer with your group and decide on the correct answer together. Display FINAL answer on the white board. Randomly select a group to answer. The first group to get the answer correct, gets a KABOOM card. If you get a positive card, keep the points. If you get a negative card, take the points from any team you want. TEACHER MAY TAKE POINTS FROM ANY TEAM NOT SHOWING APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR.
