  3. Usingthe Common App website Log ontowww.commonapp.orgtobeginyourapplicationprocess. Evenbeforesigningon, youcan explore the site byusingthe “search for colleges” option. Thisoptionallowsyouto look upthe general information for differentuniversities. This includes theiradmissionrates, financial aidinformation, andacademicopportunities.

  4. Searching for Colleges Withinthecollegesearchresultsunder “Admission”, thereis a sectionspecificallycateredtointernationaladmissions. Look heretoseetheinternationalrequirements for eachuniversity.

  5. MakinganAccount Begin bycreatinganaccount

  6. Beginningthe Common App Youwillbeginyourapplicationbyfilling out yourpersonalinformation. The checkmarksindicatewhichsectionshavebeencompleted.

  7. ChoosingColleges Click “CollegeSearch” in ordertofindcollegestoaddtoyourlist. Checkthis box toseetheinformation for yourdesiredenrollmentperiod (Fall 2014).

  8. ChoosingColleges Youcanalsosearchbyregiontoseethedifferentcolleges in a particular cityorstate.

  9. ChoosingColleges Click onthenameofthecollegetofindthe general information for theschool. Checkthe box andpress “Add” to include thecollegetoyourcollegelist. Makesurethatyou CHECK THE LOCATION oftheuniversityyou are interested in because some collegesmayhave similar names.

  10. Applyingtospecificcolleges Afteryouhavecompiledyourlistofcolleges, you’llneedtocheckeachcollege for thesupplementalquestionstheywillaskyou for yourapplication. DO NOT assignyourrecommendersthroughthisoption. YouwillsubmityourrecommendationstoEducationUSAandwewillforward it toyouruniversities. Hereyouwillfindtheadditionalwritingsupplement for eachcollege. Notallcollegesrequire a writingsupplementsoyouwillneedtocheck.

  11. Applyingtospecificcolleges Afteryouhavecompiledyourlistofcolleges, you’llneedtocheckeachcollege for thesupplementalquestionstheywillaskyou for yourapplication. Hereistheoptionthatallowsyouto invite yourteachersandcounselortosend in yourrecommendations . Hereyouwillfindtheadditionalwritingsupplement for eachcollege. Notallcollegesrequire a writingsupplementsoyouwillneedtocheck.

  12. InvitingRecommenders Whenyoutryto invite yourrecommenders, youwillbedirectedtothismessagewhichrequiresyoutoauthorizeyourschoolto release yourschooldocumentsandrecommnedations. The nextpagewillgiveyoutheoptionofwaivingyourrighttoseeyourrecommendations. We HIGHLY suggestthatyou do.

  13. InvitingRecommenders Althoughyoumaywanttoseeyourrecommendationsbeforethey are sent, universitiespreferthatyouwaiveyourrightbecause it ensuresthatthey are gettinganhonestaccountofwhoyou are. Some schoolswillnotreadyourrecommendationsatalliftheyseethatyou do notwaivethisright. It isnotmandatory, butwehighlysuggestthatyouchoosethisoption.

  14. Assigningyourteachers Whenyou click here, an e-mail willbesenttoyourteacherandtheywillbeofficiallyassigned as yourrecommender.

  15. Youmayedityourteacherassignment settings here. Whenyourteachersubmitshisorherrecommendation, youwillbenotified.

  16. Applyingtospecificcolleges You must besureto release theauthorizationsothatyourtranscriptandrecommendationsmaybesenttocollegesdirectlyfromyourschool. Ifyourschool does nothave a collegeadviser, your principal may serve as yourcounselor. Youwillsubmit 3 recommendationstoEducationUSA- 2 fromteachersand 1 fromyourcounselor. DO NOT INVITE ANY TEACHERS OR COUNSELORS THROUGH THE COMMON APP.

  17. Applyingtospecificcolleges You must besureto release theauthorizationsothatyourtranscriptandrecommendationsmaybesenttocollegesdirectlyfromyourschool. Ifyourschool does nothave a collegeadviser, your principal may serve as yourcounselor. Youwillsubmit 3 recommendationstoEducationUSA- 2 fromteachersand 1 fromyourcounselor. Hereistheoptionto invite a teacher

  18. Applyingtospecificcolleges Thereare differentdeadlines for earlyaction, earlydecision, and regular decision. Youwillwanttodiscusswithyouradvisertofigure out theoptionthatwouldbebest for you.

  19. ApplyingEarly Ifyouhavefallen in lovewith a school, youmaychoosetoapplyearly. Thistellstheadmissionofficersthatyou are interested in thisschool more thananyotherschool. The deadlines are usually in November, ratherthanJanuary. Applyingearly DOES NOT alwaysincreaseyour chances ofgettinginto a schooland it does have some drawbacks becauseyoucannot compare financial aidpackages. Ifyouchoosetoapplyearly, there are twooptions. EarlyDecision Whenyouapplyearlydecision, youracceptanceisbindingandyou must committothecollege. You must withdrawyourapplications for allothercollegesandconfirmyouracceptance in December. EarlyAction Whenyouapplyearlyaction, youracceptancetotheschoolis non-binding, meaningthatyouwillnothavetocommituntil May. Youmay still applytoothercolleges.

  20. Testing Policies Mostcollegesrequirethe SAT, however, there are some exceptions. Some schoolsalsorequire SAT subjecttests. Thisinformationisprovidedontheschool profile. Click onthe link undertestingpolicytoseethespecific policies for a givencollege. Hereisanexampleofan SAT optionalcollege. Youwouldneedto click onthe link toseetheirotherrequirements.

  21. Applyingtospecificcolleges The Dashboardoptionwilltellyouaboutyourprogressoneachofyourapplicationsas well as the deadlines.

  22. Reportingyour Test Scores Whenyou are reportingyourtest scores, youcanchooseto self report. Thismeansthatyouwillreportyourbest scores for eachsection, ratherthansubmittingthefull scores for every SAT test. Be awarethat some schoolsrequireyoutosubmitevery score for every test.

  23. Self-reportingyour scores Noticethatthestudentreceivedherbestmath score on a differentdaythanherbestcriticalreadingandwriting scores.

  24. StudentActivities Thisisyouropportunityto show collegesyour non-academicinterestsandleadership roles. Youwillhavetheoptiontosubmit 10 activities. Rankyouractivities in orderofimportancetoyou. Be as detailed as possible in yourdescriptions.

  25. Examples Activity: Journalism Position: Editor Hours per week: 8 hours Weeks per year: 30 weeks I wasthe editor for theschoolnewspaper. I alsowroteeditorials for theopinionsection. Activity: Community Service Position: English Tutor Hours per week: 4 hours Weeks per year: 30 weeks I tutored 9th and 10th grade students for 2 years. Activity: Sports Position: Team Captain Hours per week: 12 hours Weeks per year: 52 weeks I wasthecaptainofa club soccer teamfor twoyears. I helped lead theteamtowin 2 championships. Activity: Computers/Technology Position: PresidentofRobotics Club Hours per week: 5 hours Weeks per year: 20 weeks Wewon a city-widecompetition.
