The unexamined life is not worth living!! • Soldier in the Peloponnesian War before becoming a teacher. • Did not believe that teachers should be paid to teach; did not believe in memorization • Evil could result from ignorance • Socratic Method – persistent questioning • Criticized democracy – made many enemies • Put on trial and convicted for corrupting the minds of Athenian Youth

Plato - 427B.C. to 347B.C. • Student of Socrates • Recorded his ideas • Wealthy, young aristocrat • Founded the Academy • Wrote dialogues, The Republic • People should do the work for which they are best suited. • Aristocracy based on intelligence, reasoning, and education What would Socrates say?

  6. Aristotle “Happiness depends upon ourselves.” “Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work.” “Poverty is the parent of revolution and crime.”
