  2. Literacies in schools then with typewriters • Typewriters were used to communicate thoughts onto a typed piece of paper. This is very similar to how we use computers today. Typewriters used an ink on each letter to make an impression onto a piece of paper. It is much harder to catch and correct mistakes using a typewriter than a computer. • Cost: Typewriters usually cost around $100 • If you want to see a typewriter, click here

  3. Literacies in schools then with floppy disks • Floppy disks were used for storage. They were square in shape and could be used to store information (i.e. homework assignments) and bring them to school. Floppy disks have been replaced with USB drives, which are smaller and contain more storage space. • Cost: On Ebay, you can buy 10 floppy disks for 8 dollars. • If you want to buy a floppy disk, click here

Literacies in schools now with tablets • Tablets = portable computers, but not as powerful; can be used to take notes as well as record lectures electronically • Cost: Tablets can vary between $100 - $1000 depending on the brand and the features included • If interested in buying a tablet, click here

Literacies in schools now with e-books • E-books = electronic versions of textbooks that can be viewed from a computer or tablet, usually a cheaper and lighter alternative for many students • Cost: e-books vary in cost, but are usually significant cheaper than the paperback or hardcover version of their textbook • To view an example of a textbook, click here

Literacies in schools nowwith online homework • Online homework allows students to do homework assignments through software programs made by different companies (Pearson, ALEKS) • Online home work can tell the student immediately if they are right or wrong • Cost: Some universities have deals with these companies so that students can attain access to their homework for $40 - $50 • To view an example of online homework, click here

  7. Literacies in schools now with apps • Technological devices such as tablets and smartphones allow users to downloade many different apps. These apps can aid in education. For example, a medical student could download apps such as “Muscle and Bone Anatomy 3D” or “Radiology 2.0” These apps are convenient because they can be accessed anywhere. • Cost: Many apps are free but education-related apps can range from $10 - $20 • To view an example of an educational app, click here
