  4. Now, we will put your ideas from the bellwork under one of the following three categories. While you wait your turn, please copy these onto your lecture questions (#11)

  5. Is Government Needed? • Wouldn't it be possible for all Americans to live as they choose with total freedom and without a government establishing limits on our individual freedoms? • Do we, as a society really need rules and regulations to enforce cooperation among individuals?

  6. What does this mean? “To Be Free, One Must Be Chained.”

  7. Establish Order • What are some classroom rules that we have to establish order in here?

  8. Provide Security • What are some classroom rules that we have to provide security in here?

  9. Accomplish Common Goals • What are some classroom procedures that we have to accomplish common goals in here?

  11. Structure of Government Geographic Distribution of Power Unitary All powers belong to a single, centralized government Example: Great Britain

  12. Federal Powers are divided between a central government and several local governments Example: United States

  13. Confederation Power is in the local governments, and if there is a central government, it is weak. Example: European Union

Vocabulary Pictoword You will create a pictoword for either: • Unitary (all power with national gov) • Federal (power shared between national gov and local or state gov) • Confederate (local/states have the power) Examples: note – we’re not talking kings/queens here so I shouldn’t see any crowns

What do you think might be the challenges of reporting news about a country that has banned international news organizations? • Do you think that the international community should get involved in regions of crisis and conflict? In your opinion, what impact, if any, might the removal of foreign aid have on the people of Malawi? • What is your reaction to the cigarette warning labels discussed in today's program? Do you think that people will be less likely to take up smoking as a result of these labels? Why or why not? • What is your reaction to what Joplin High School students Yainer Oviedo and Lydia McAllister said in the interview with CNN's Carl Azuz? What questions would you want to ask these Joplin High School students?
