I am • Mark Usher • Founder & CEO – Proto Foundation • Electrical Engineer by training and profession • Currently at Public Utilities Commission –Regulatory • Am a Husband, father, son, brother, uncle, citizen, sportsman..only now I wear the ball! • Other members of our Board and executive management teams are also here..

  4. Feelings and emotions

  5. His test.. • In mid 2005 we discovered Orchel had Nephritis of the kidney. She had a rapid decline. She was around 15yrs excelling at school.. • Doc said, “ dialysis or kidney transplant for extended life”…she literally went on the brink! • Got down and said, “God if you give me back my first born child, I will spend the rest of my life doing your work” • Got up walked outside and said “Susie we sending Orchel to LA!”

  6. Divine intervention • Orchel ended up in the care of Dr Lawrence Opas – a leading medical research doctor in the field of Nephrology! • There is not a soul in this world who can convince me otherwise that such fate was not divine intervention • God kept his promised to us…so now its our turn

Mission…Vision...Focus • Proto’s singular mission is the build the infrastructure and machinery to give as much at risk youths a chance to make the system work for them. • A child, regardless of race, colour or socio-economic background, getting an opportunity to wholesome education can become a functional and productive citizen despite all the new age problems our community now faces. • Proto’s vision is to have its reach in every part of Belize, whether by direct branches or affiliation with orgs of like mission, vision and focus. • Proto’s focus is so simple it almost poetic – PRIMARY SCHOOLS!!!!!

Method… • There is a river flowing in Belize…river of blood.. • One way to slow down a river is to build a dam! • We believe that dam can be built at the primary schools • That dam will be called “prevention first’ dam • If we can provide each and every child with the same resources, situations and circumstances as those provided to those of us with some means, then we may be on our way to reducing the amount of especially you males caught up in this river of blood..

  18. We started as.. • A family tradition done yearly… • Group of colleagues liked and joined in… • Great response… we went to the media… • the wider community loved it…and as they say…the rest is history…

Bak-2-Skool Drive – Huge Success • We collected uniforms, school bags, footwear in unexpected quantities • As much as $1800 donated…this was not expected but welcomed nonetheless • A host of text books and other school supplies came in • We initially targeted 75 kids but ended up reaching as much as 180… • The cash donations used to purchase new uniforms, footwear and paid registration fees in some instances… • A kind lady gave us the name we now use – PROTO….

Past Milestones • ÞJuly 2009/10/11—Annual Bak-2-skool drive, PROTO collected reusable school items such as school bags, uniforms and textbooks and assisted hundreds of needy kids in primary schools across Belize City • ÞJanuary 2010—Jose Cruz Dollar Drive, PROTO raised over $17,000 to send kidney dialysis patient Jose Cruz to Guatemala for medical treatment • ÞJuly 2010—Tarrell Sutherland Livity Drive Phase I, PROTO raised over $18,000 to send Tarrell back to US for medical treatment • ÞOctober 2010—Afta-d-Storm Soup Kitchen, PROTO assisted other outreach organizations to deliver over 2000 hot meals and other relief supplies to victims of Hurricane Richard in Haittiville, Freetown Sibun and Gracie Rock Village • ÞOctober 2010—PROTO-Q fundraiser, PROTO spearheaded the sale of 840 plates of BBQ to raise funds to assist U-15 National Basketball team to attend Regional Tournaments in Mexico

Our Programs ANNUAL BAK-2-SKOOL DRIVE •  Now in its fourth year this innovative initiative provides for parents to donate used text books, uniforms, bags, footwear and any other school related items that are in reusable condition. •  PROTO then redistribute these items through its network with the various school Principals who ensure the items reaches the students needing them the most. • This program continues to have overwhelming support from the community.

Programs cont’d.. • STANDARD 3 TO UB SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM • PROTO will launch this program in the academic year September 2012 to June 2013. • PROTO will identify at risk youths and provide all required for that child to attend school up to the highest level available at our National University. • Students will be awarded either a Sports or Performing Arts scholarship • Student and parents will be required to sign a social contract binding each party to certain covenants to ensure program success. • Monitoring will be a combined effort of PROTO and the attending institution.

Programs cont’d BAK YAAD READING • The pilot phase of this program will be conducted from September to December of 2012 • Yet another PROTO innovation where stay-home MOMs will be trained and paid to conduct reading sessions with neighborhood kids • Program will provide much needed employment at the same improve each child’s literacy level • Reading sessions held after school and weekends; one hour sessions with a maximum of 4 kids per session to ensure each child reads aloud for at least 15 minutes. • Each child’s progress will be documented.

Programs cont’d… COMMUNITY SPORTING CLUB PROGRAM • PROTO will foster the development of sporting clubs in each community/neighborhood in all the sports disciplines, but on a phased in process to avoid overloading • Clubs will be managed by coaches and an administrator from that community/neighborhood and will focus primarily on youths ages 5 to 15 • Coaches will be formally trained and equipped to teach the fundamentals of the game to these kids, as well as build social capital in discipline, sportsmanship, teamwork, respect and the like. • Continuous tournament will be organized and administered by PROTO so that the different clubs can showcase their kids talents, and raise their level of skill.

COMMUNITY SPORTING CLUB PROGRAM ….cont’d • Games will be played at the parks and playgrounds in the various community/neighborhood so that family and friends have no excuse to not come out and support these kids. • PROTO will ensure coaches/administrators are paid a stipend so that they can dedicate the time to the clubs. • PROTO is very excited about this program as it has the potential to create the paradigm shift needed to get mami, dadi, bredda, sistahoff the couch and back outside supporting the kids right in their neighborhoods.

Funding cont’d… Community based support: • At the base of PROTO’s sponsorship pyramid is the support from regular working class Belizeans • PROTO makes your support so EFFORTLESS in nature yet life changing for a child otherwise exposed to the devastation of poverty and crime…. •  You chose the option and duration you are most comfortable with and PROTO will find a way to reach you each time. ..”lee bit from lottawi go wha long way”

Funding cont’d… Corporate support: • PROTO seeks to partner with private sector orgs to roll out programs that require more substantial support • PROTO compiles and submit program proposals to potential corporate sponsor for review/approval • PROTO encourages hand-on participation from corporate sponsors….

Commitment to Transparency • PROTO pledges to take the lead in accountability and transparency for non profit community outreach organizations in Belize. • PROTO uses a system where a sponsor can track each and every dollar (or in kind) donated…this will be available online once the website is completed; anyone can visit the Secretariat to view this information at anytime. • PROTO has an internal auditor and will conduct external audits as required for NPO in Belize.
