  4. Course Policies • Can be found on the class blog; you are responsible for knowing them! • No electronics • Participation counts • Grades and the grading system • Emails • Classroom etiquette

  5. RaiderWriter • raiderwriter.engl.ttu.edu • Firefox works best. • Be sure to get your account set up asap.

  6. The Bedford St. Martin’s eHandbook • You must purchase the e- version for this class. If you have purchased a used copy from a bookstore, take it back as soon as possible for a full refund. • You can either 1) purchase an access code for the book at the bookstore, or (easier) 2) use a credit/debit card to buy the book online. • Links to the eHandbookand RaiderWriter can be found on the class blog.

  7. BA1 – due by midnight Friday • Account for technology going wrong, don’t wait too late to start! (aim for Wednesday) • Register on RaiderWriter and take the grammar diagnostic. (link will be on RaiderWriter homepage) • * YOU CAN ONLY ACCESS THE DIAGNOSTIC ONCE. Do not click on the link to take the test unless you are ready to sit down and take it. If you exit the diagnostic, you will not be able to get back in and complete it. Set aside 1 and ½ to 2 hours.

  8. Diagnostic • You will need three pieces of information for this: • Your TTU email address • Your instructor’s last name: Vaughan • Your section number: • 2-3:20 – 016 • 3:30-4:50 - 018

  9. Submitting into RaiderWriter • In RaiderWriter, read the assignment description for BA 1 carefully. Type a response in Word or another program that helps catch errors and paste the response into RaiderWriter. • Sometimes RaiderWriter changes the formatting from this pasting, so look over your work before submitting! • Again, account for technological problems and finish early!

  10. BA1 Success • Read through and answer questions thoroughly. • Put effort into the assignment. A few short simple sentences with no expansion and very little thought and work are not what we want- the grade will reflect the issue. Specific and thoughtful answers will help you get a good grade. Write complete sentences and check the document for errors. Proofread! • Create two to three paragraphs and keep them thoughtfully organized. Consider content when setting up each paragraph. Your response should be 300-350 words.

  15. Today’s Participation • Discuss your goals for the class. What grade do you want? How do you plan to achieve that goal? • If you have previously taken 1301, what went wrong the first time? How do you plan to succeed this time? • After our discussion, what are some concerns/questions you have about the class? • Tell me something interesting about yourself! • Please print your name at the top of the right side of the page.

  16. Participation for Next Class • Quiz over the syllabus. • Summary and paraphrase of “Writing in the Discipline: Introduction” by KathiGroenendyk, pp. 274-275. • The summary must be over the entire article. • The paraphrase may be over one paragraph if you so choose. • Both should be three to five sentences long.

  17. Review • Buy the textbook and eHandbookand activate your RaiderWriter account. • Take the diagnostic by Wednesday and submit BA1 by Friday at midnight. Submit on RaiderWriter; do not email it to me. • Complete readings 1, 2, and 3. • Familiarize yourself with the class blog. You are responsible for knowing what is there. • Come to class prepared…
