The 2007 NEA study, "To Read or Not To Read," reveals concerning trends in reading habits among Americans. As time spent reading declines, so do reading comprehension skills, with serious implications for civic engagement, social cohesion, and economic performance. Proficient readers are significantly more likely to secure high-paying jobs, whereas basic readers face employment challenges. The study highlights a pressing need for enhanced literacy education, especially given the rising demand for reading and writing skills in the workforce.
