  2. INTRODUCTION: DEFINITION Subject-verb agreement is a grammatical rule that states that the verb must agree in number with its subject. It is important for the student to identify the subject of the sentence in order to select the correct verb to pair it with. Notice the difference between singular and plural forms in the following examples:

  3. . Singular & Plural nouns: In English,  present tense verbs change to show agreement in the third person singular form (subjects represented by the pronouns HE, SHE, IT) by adding an S or ES. 

  4. b) Irregular verb Be: The irregular verb BE has three forms in the present tense and two forms in the past tense. Some examples are given below:

  5. c) When pronouns are replaced by nouns: Subject-verb agreement often causes problems when a noun rather than a pronoun is the subject of the verb.  

  6. WHERE IS THE SUBJECT? In order to find out if your subject and verb agree, you need to be able to identify the subject of your sentence. Here are some helpful hints that will help you to decipher where your subject is and where it is not: • Most likely, your verb will agree with the first noun to the left of the verb:

  7. 2. In poems the subject is usually found after the verb.For example: 3. If subjects are joined by and, they are consideredplural:

  8. 4. The relative pronouns (who, whom, which, and that) are either singular or plural, depending on the words they refer to. For example:

  9. 5. Indefinite pronouns (someone, somebody, each, either one, everyone, or anyone) are considered singular and need singular verbs although they convey plural meaning.

  10. 6. A few nouns can be either plural or singular, depending on whether they mean a group or separate individuals. These words are rarely used as plurals in modern writing.

  11. 7. A few subjects look plural but are really singular or vice versa.

OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON At the end of the lesson the students will be able to: • Place the nouns and verbs in their sentence correctly • They will also understand if the words join to a singular subject by, with, as well as and etc. • They will understand if there are two or more singular nouns or pronouns joined by and require a plural verb.

  16. CONCLUSION In conclusion it is important for us to learn subject/verb agreement so that we may know how to make a verb sound accurate from a particular set of words. For our students to understand in a simpler way we would encourage them through practical exercise in a class room.
