  1. Ms. WestLanguage Arts through TechnologyWelcome to the 2013-2014 school year!

Many of you know me, but maybe you didn’t know… • That I love to play board and card games. • I lived in Germany for three years. • My favorite music is country. • I love Adam Sandler movies. • My favorite holiday is Christmas. • My son and I recently got a puppy. His name is Griffin and let me show you a picture! • I love being around middle school kids all day. • I want to be a better teacher…help me!

  3. So what about our class? • You will be speaking, reading, listening and writing. You will have a good time and so will I! • You will also work hard, give me your best effort, and do your homework. •  Yes, homework will be given and you will have it almost every night.

  4. Goals: • Improved reading comprehension • Improved writing skills • Expanded vocabulary • Improved academic performance • Life long reader • Better test taking skills • To have fun learning!

  5. Homework • Time is given at the beginning of class for students to copy homework assignments on the class calendar. Purpose: • To encourage daily reading of fiction and non-fiction • Students are required to read for 30 minutes, 4 nights a week and write a response to what they have read • Reading Response Logs (RRL’s) will be coming!

  6. Students who read…. • 40.4 minutes per day are in the 90th percentile…(Making an A!) • 12.9 minutes per day are in the 50th percentile….(What grade is a 50%?) • 1.6 minutes per day are in the 10th percentile…(UH OH!) …on standardized tests (like STAAR)

  7. So what’s so important about that? • Better jobs =

  8. Double block class • This means the class will be divided into two periods. • One period will be for our Readers/Writer’s Workshop. • The other period will be for Scholastic Reading – Read 180 or System 44.

  9. You will have: • A Readers-Writers Notebook. • A Graded Work Folder - will contain quizzes, writing samples, projects. It will stay in the room and be available for your parent to see at anytime. • A Work Folder - will contain current and ongoing work. This will include forms to track your independent reading and progress in Read 180/System 44. It will stay in the classroom.

  10. Tour of the Classroom You will be assigned a computer. Take care of head phones. Leave the work area clean.

  11. What do you think the purpose is for the wind chimes? Talk to your partner.

  12. Learning and Language Target – we will go over each day. • Find the Learning Target in the room. • Find the Language Target in the room.

  13. Bell Work & Home Work • You are expected to come in, look at the door, and complete the bell work. • The expectation is that you write the homework every day on our class calendar.

  19. Computer Expectations • Keep headphones on. Even if it messes your hair. • Work hard. • Do not disturb others around you. • No music! • You will get a computer-generated grade in the 4 zones. These are formative assessments.

  23. Super Students! What’s that? Super Student Award Name___________ • You earn tickets for the Friday drawing! •  Don’t you love this class? What would you like?

  24. Suggestion/Complaint/Friday Song Box! • Put your suggestions, ideas, complaints, notes in this box. You may also request a Friday song if your class has earned it!

  25. Class Norms: Be Kind. Show Respect. Have PRIDE! • Be kind to each other. Be kind to me. • Show respect to yourself, others, and to me. • Respect our school. • Have PRIDE in all that you do!

  26. Student of the Day! • Why? I need help! • Cons: You help with anything that I need. • Pros: You get a JR, you wear the lanyard, free pass out of the room for water or bathroom, you help with anything that I need. Builds responsibility. • Duties: Include passing out papers, checking to making sure h/w is written, etc.

  27. EMERGENCY DRILLSand the real thing! • SILENT! This is really important to me. I want you to be safe. Please be silent, remain calm, and know that I will do everything I can to keep you safe.

  28. Super Student Award! • You will receive Super Student tickets when you show PRIDE! • Mini-drawings when earned. • Friday drawing. What would you like? • If you ask for one, you don’t get one.

  29. Learning by Popsicle Sticks has been replaced! • Pick a card…any card! • Write your name on it in marker. • We will use these to choose partners or groups. • We will use these to choose a random student to share an idea or thought. • Sometimes they are used to select a student for a preferred activity.
