  3. What’s Going on in the World? In chaos after Rome collapses Islamic World • Rome has collapsed • Western Europe is in disarray • World Trade has broken down • Muslims begin to fill void left by Romans Byzantine Empire Chinese Dynasties

  4. The Rise of Islam • Originally, Arabs are grouped into several small tribes • The region of SW Asia is controlled by the aging Persian Empire and the Byzantine Empire • By the 7th Century, the Persians & Byzantines had been fighting each other for centuries

The Empire Begins Let’s Get It Started! • As Islam spreads, Arabs are united by a common religion and language • Islam & Arabic • Muslims call a Jihad for SW Asia • They begin to fight with Byzantines & Persians for control of SW Asia • Eventually, Islam covers everything from the West of India to Spain
