  8. UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA, Department of Chemistry Laboratory of Environmental Technology and Pollution Control 6. Description of partner’s study biotopes • Amvrakikos Wetlands (Louros and Arachthos rivers delta) • Axios river delta • Evros river delta

  9. UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA, Department of Chemistry Laboratory of Environmental Technology and Pollution Control • Amvrakikos Wetlands • The rivers Louros and Arachthos meet in the wetland of Amvrakikos Gulf which is protected by the Ramsar Convention.

  10. UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA, Department of Chemistry Laboratory of Environmental Technology and Pollution Control • Amvrakikos Wetlands • The region is an almost closed and hence protected marine area, which communicates with the adjacent lagoons via controlled accesses. • Amvrakikos Gulf is the reservoir of a runoff basin, is total area is 4.400 km2 • Total average annual runoff from rainfall into Amvrakikos Gulf is estimated at 28x108 m3 • The law lands of Arta plain, in the Eastern side of Amvrakikos Gulf, consist of saline soils and beyond them stretch the agricultural areas with a surface of 74.700 hectares

  11. Thermaikos Gulf Wetlands • Constitute one of the most important and diverse ecosystems for wildlife in Greece, extending over 68.7 km2 and is protected by the Ramsar Convention. • The Axios river basin (120000 ha) constitute the main agricultural area (95000 ha) of Northern Greece. • The length of the river is approximately 380 Km and only the last 80 km is located in Greece. Axios originates from FYROM and discharge into the Thermaikos Bay in the North Aegean Sea

  12. UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA, Department of Chemistry Laboratory of Environmental Technology and Pollution Control • Evros delta wetlands • Evros delta wetland is located at the Greek-Turkish border and covers an area of 188 Km2. • Evros river is a multinational (Greece, Turkish, Bulgaria) river of the Balkan penisula with a catchment basin of 53.000 Km2 • 6000 ha are actually being cultivated and other 5000 ha have been abandoned because of the high salinity of the soil. The cultivated land is mostly located at the western and central part of the delta.

  13. UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA, Department of Chemistry Laboratory of Environmental Technology and Pollution Control • Evros delta wetlands • The wetland is considered a biotope of international importance for its avifauna and is included in the list of Wetlands protected under the Ramsar Convention • It is Formed by the Alluvial Deposits of the River and shaped by the Sea

  14. UNIVERSITY OF IOANNINA, Department of Chemistry Laboratory of Environmental Technology and Pollution Control Description of study biotopes • Evros delta wetlands • It is known that the pollution sources in these countries include • Runoff from the intensively cultivated plains of Plovdiv • Wastewater from heavy industrial activity in both countries • Untreated sewage from large urban centers along the river course • The river flow presents important seasonal fluctuations with high flow rates in winter and very low flow rates in summer
