  4. Directions for the activityGet a blank piece of paperYou will have 30 seconds to write down all the slang words you can think of related to SexualityDo not talk or say them out loud, this is your list only!

  5. What is Sexuality? In groups of 3 or 4 Write the groups’ definition of SEX U AL ITY  Be prepared to share your answers in class Make sure all names are on the paper and submit it for a grade.

  6. Sexuality is………… everything that refers to you as a male or female. It is your personality, the way you act and how you feel about being male or female. It is an important part of your physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual health. Sexuality is a part of who you are. It includes attitudes and feelings about your body and the opposite sex. It also includes your attitudes and feelings about your sex roll, your sexual orientation, as well as the sexual orientation of others.

  7. As a group, discuss and write down your answers to the following, be prepared to share in class Explain what may influence an individual’s sexuality. Identify characteristics that would indicate a “Healthy” attitude regarding sexuality. Support the importance of developing “Healthy” Sexuality. Describe an “Unhealthy” attitude regarding sexuality? Defend the dangers of an “Unhealthy” sexuality. Questions for the group

(Positive self image, Positive Self Esteem, Self Respect, Feeling good in your skin) Support the importance of developing “Healthy” Sexuality. (Respect for Societal norms, morality) Describe an “Unhealthy” attitude regarding sexuality? (Depression, Engaging in activities that go against your values) Defend the dangers of an “Unhealthy” sexuality. (Immorality across all age groups, disrespect for societal norms) Questions for the group

The term sexuality refers to sexual activity, primarily sexual intercourse. • Body image does not play a part in a person’s sexuality. • In today’s society values are not a reality. • The gender roles have changed over the decades. • A person socialization is not an important factor in their sexuality.

  10. What is a Value???? Important and enduring beliefs or ideals shared by an individual or a culture about what is good or desirable and what is not. Values exert major influence on the behavior of an individual and serve as guidelines in life situations.

  11. What Values do you have???? Take a slip of paper and list a value that you have, be prepared to describe your value. Be prepared to support the need for values in our society today. Predict what might happen in society if people did not have values.

  23. Body image is the way a person thinks his or her body looks in comparison to the “social” norm. The spoke of Body Image I look marvelous!!!!!!

  26. Spiritual Sexuality The negatives include lust, sexual excess, degradation and suppression of sexual energy, these revolve around religion or a belief in a higher power. It’s positives include opening hearts to love and channeling human sexual energies through meditation, celibacy, devotion and life-force energy.

  27. What is your personality ? A brief definition would be that personality is made up of the characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings and behaviors that make a person unique. In addition to this, personality arises from within the individual and remains fairly consistent throughout life.

  28. Define Sexual Orientation: It is the recognition of gender preference with regard to sexual attraction. The terms are defined as: Homosexual- attracted to the same gender Heterosexual- attracted to the opposite gender Bisexual- attracted equally to both genders Asexual—not attracted to any gender Sexual Orientation is a large part of your Sexuality

  29. Sexual feelings are natural! They can be very strong when you are a teenager. How do sexual feeling happen? Your body produces hormones that cause them. Your reaction to sexual feelings is very important. Your reaction is influenced by your values, your environment, your peers, your family, etc. Sexual feelings are not the same for everyone. Some people have sexual feeling for people they know personally and for people they don’t know such as rock stars, athletes, etc. Sexual Feeling

  30. Discovering your Sexuality!!! • In the process of maturing, both physically and emotionally, it’s normal to have questions about sexuality. The answers are not quick to come by. • Consider the following before reading the article: • Who was your first big crush? • Have you discovered your sexual orientation? • Are you familiar with the “Klein Sexual Orientation Scale”? • Is sexual orientation a matter of choice? • What are your views regarding the media’s portrayal of sexuality, especial sexual orientation? • Read the current Health article “Discovering Your Sexuality”

  32. AdolescenceBIG changes! Ages 12-19, A gradual change from a child to an adult. Physical: Growth spurts, appearance of pubic hair, sperm production, menstrual cycle Mental: Strong emotions, mood swings Social : Peer acceptance is important

  33. Positive changes include, making your own decisions, feeling more independent, and discovering new abilities. • Negative changes include, moodiness, sensitivity to rejection, dealing with the consequences of your decision making. • IT CAN BE A TIME OF CONFUSION!!!

  34. Changes in the body Caused by hormones in the Endocrine system that are secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. Testosterone--- Primary Male Hormone Estrogen and Progesterone are the primary female hormones. These hormones are responsible for the “Secondary Sex Characteristics” that appear during puberty.

  35. The Characteristics and the timing of the changes will vary from individual to individual. It is determined by: • Heredity • Nutrition • Overall state of Health

  36. Girls begin around age 9- 91/2 and end around age 14 or 15

  37. Boys begin puberty around age 11 and continue into their early 20’s

  39. “Discovering Your Sexuality” After discussing the topic of Sexuality in class, viewing the power point and reading the article, write a paragraph explaining what sexuality means. Use at least three of the spokes in the wheel from the handout.

  43. The directions for the Personality Profile Activity Go to the website on the previous screen Answer the questions to the best of your knowledge, then click score. You will have a personality profile such as ISTJ, etc. After you get your profile , click on “Type Description by D Kersey” and the screen will show a lot of information related to that particular profile. You can read it and answer the questions on the worksheet by maneuvering through the site. Submit your worksheet for a participation grade.
