  2. ‘Go-Green’ Australian Apprenticeships Project Objective A suite of Australian Apprenticeship Sample Training Programs, across industry for occupations that relate to the environment or sustainability.

  3. Sustainability • The concept of ‘sustainability’ proposes a balance between biophysical, economic, social and political systems in development. (Fien 2001) It also seeks to ensure that society meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ (World Commission on Environment and Development 1987).

  4. Sustainable Development Vocational training can play a major role in addressing the complex and interdependent problems such as poor environmental practices that threaten our future. The best way to encourage sustainable practices is to link sustainability to our existing practices, such as our VET practices.

  5. VET and the environment • Strong support exists for the use of competency standards as a way to define training needs and to drive delivery of VET for industry. • Government policy and industry acknowledges the need for more environmentally friendly industry practices.

  6. ‘Here and Now’ This project offers: • An attractive ‘here and now’ solution to industry sustainability via flexible use of existing Training Package qualifications across industry. • A guide to the range of vocations to be considered when estimating future environmental vocational needs.

  7. Lead by Example • Making Training Packages more adaptable to industry. • ‘Ready to use’ examples of Training Package implementation methods for Australian Apprenticeships makes cross-industry Australian Apprenticeships ready for up-take.
