  9. 1980 Referendum • Sovereignty-association = politically independent but economically associated 40% vote YES 60% vote NO

  10. Patriating Constitution 1981 • Amending formula – the process by which changes can legally be made to the Canada Constitution. • Notwithstanding Clause – which allowed the provinces to opt out of some of the clauses in the Charter. • Kitchen Compromise – Levesque felt angry and betrayed.

  11. Meech Lake Accord 1987 • Recognize Quebec as a distinct society. • Pierre Trudeau argued that. • The Meech Lake Accord disintegrated in June 1990. • Bloc Quebecois formed to support the aim of separation.

  12. Charlottetown Accord 1992 • Similar to Meech Accord. • Reformed the Senate and supported Aboriginal self-government. • 54.5% of Canadian voters rejected it. • Greatest opposition – B.C.

  13. 1995 Referendum 49.4% vote YES 50.6%vote NO The votes were so closed!!!
