For all 7 had her as a wife Jesus answered, ”You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God” Marriage will not be needed in heaven Moses showed in the burning bush passage that the dead are raised God is not the God of the dead but the living Sadducees silenced

Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying, Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise. And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.

  5. In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife. And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven.

  6. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err. (Mark 12:18-27)

A Scribe Questions JesusMark 12:28-34; Matt. 22:34-40 • A scribe or lawyer - one that is learned or skilled in the Law of Moses • The scribe, tempting or trying Jesus asked, “Which is the great commandment in the Law?” • Jesus answered: put God first in heart, soul & mind • Jesus continued further: the second is liken unto it, you shall love thy neighbor as thy self

A Scribe Questions JesusMark 12:28-34; Matt. 22:34-40 • Note Jesus didn’t say it was the greatest but the 1st(foremost) great commandment and the 2nd was like the 1st • Jesus summed up the entire Law of Commandments with these 2 precepts • Consider: the first 4 Commandments deal with our attitude toward God; the other 6 deal with our relationships to our fellow man • Question: • Did the scribe change his intentions?

  10. Mark 12:28-34; And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel;

  11. The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

  12. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question. (Mark 12:28-34)

Whose Son is He?” • Jesus asked a fair question but couldn’t be explained without exposing their opposition to Him • Jesus quoted Psalm 110:1 where David reveals Christ to be his Lord • The Pharisees denied the divinity of Christ • The argument of Jesus - how could David recognize Jesus as His Lord if He was only his son

For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly. (Mark 12:35-37)

Woe To The Scribes & PhariseesMark 12:38-40; Matt. 23:1-39; Luke 20:45-47 • Jesus had answered the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Herodians • Jesus delivered a scathing condemnation to them • His disciples were present in the temple to learn about the attitude of these people • Jesus exposed their hypocrisies: • They do all their works to make show • They love the chief seats in the synagogues • They love to have men call them rabbi

Woe To The Scribes & PhariseesMark 12:38-40; Matt. 23:1-39; Luke 20:45-47 Then He said to them in His teaching, "Beware of the scribes, who desire to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts, who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation." (Mark 12:38-40)

Therefore whatever they tell you to observe, that observe and do, but do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. For they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

  18. But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad and enlarge the borders of their garments. They love the best places at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues, greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi, Rabbi.' But you, do not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. And do not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher, the Christ.

  19. But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted. "But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.

  20. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.' Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

  21. And, 'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gift that is on it, he is obliged to perform it.' Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift? Therefore he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by all things on it. He who swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him who dwells in it. And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him who sits on it.

  22. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!

  23. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

  24. "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous, and say, 'If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.' "Therefore you are witnesses against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers' guilt. Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?

  25. Therefore, indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and scribes: some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from city to city, that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Assuredly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

  26. "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'BLESSED is HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' " (Matthew 23:1-39)

Woe To The Scribes & PhariseesMark 12:38-40; Matt. 23:1-39; Luke 20:45-47 • Jesus spoke directly to the scribes and Pharisees • Eight times in Matthew 23 Jesus pronounced woe upon the scribes and Pharisees • The word woe means grief or dismay and is intended to mean great calamity is in store • These woes are meant to show the inconsistency and hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees • Matthew 23:37-39 show that Jesus had compassion for his people even though they rejected Him

The Widow’s MiteMark 12:41-44; Luke 21:1-4 • Jesus watched those who were contributing to the treasury • There were 13 chests shaped like trumpets in which religious and benevolent contributions were placed • Jesus saw the rich put a lot of money in the chests He also saw the poor widow put in 2 mites (small copper coins) worth about 1 cent

Then one poor widow came and threw in two mites, which make a quadrans. So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, "Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood." (Mark 12:41-44)

Two Views On Matthew 24 • The Topic is ALL About The Coming of the Lord in Judgment On Jerusalem • The Language of Apocalyptic Judgment Used in God’s previous judgments on Israel, Assyria, Egypt, and Babylon is used here • Matthew ADDS a topic of the Lord’s Second Coming To The Discussion of the Fall of Jerusalem • Mark and Luke did not include it • This discussion of the Second Coming starts after Matt.24:34

  33. The Anguish of Jesus "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! (Matthew 23:37) • He would rather gather and protect his people – Matt.23:37a • But, Israel has not been willing – 23:37b • Jesus will have to leave the “house” (the temple) DESOLATE – 23:38-39 • This statement leads the disciples to ask WHEN this will happen and what SIGNS would lead up to this event See! Your house is left to you desolate; for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, 'BLESSED is HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' " (Matthew 23:38-39)

  34. Matthew 24 And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

  35. And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

  36. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

  37. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.

  38. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.

  39. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

  40. For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

  41. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

  42. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

  43. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.

  44. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath made ruler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all his goods.

  45. But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (Matthew 24:1-51)

  46. The Impact of Temple Destruction • Would END the Age of Judaism • The Priestly system would be lost • The Place for Jewish worship would be lost • The Political and Religious POWER of the Jewish leaders would be destroyed • The blood of righteous prophets they murdered would be “avenged” • Jesus Would Be Seen (Perceived) As The Power Directing The Salvation of His Saints and The Destruction of Judaism’s Center

  47. The Temple Destruction Discussed • The Prophecy – “Not one stone will be left upon another” – Matt.24:1-3 • The Inquiry of when – vs.3 • The Signs of Times Leading Up To This Climactic Event • A time of Apostasy – with false prophets and false messiahs – 4,5,11 • A time of anarchy and wars – 6-8 • A time of apathy regarding devotion – 12-13 • A time of affliction and persecution – 9-10 • A time of accomplishment of spreading the gospel - 14

  48. Other Signs Preceding The Climactic Fall of Jerusalem • Desecrating the temple with sacrilegious objects – prophesied in Daniel (9:27; 11:31; 12:11)– Matt. 24:15-26 • The elect will be informed to flee to the mountains (believing Jesus would pay off) • Christians could escape before the Roman army sealed off all exit routes (See Lk.21:20) • Unbelieving Jews would remain and suffer the siege and destruction • These will seem to be the darkest of days - 29

  49. Apocalyptic Language • The darkening of the Sun, Moon, and Stars • The Riding or Coming on the Clouds • These are figurative, dramatic expressions of the Lord’s coming in a judgment of destruction against a city or country • It does not refer to the complete end of the world in this context (though it severely ends the Jewish world as they knew it then) • Similar language was used by Isaiah about Babylon’s fall – Isaiah 13 • Similar language is used by Ezekiel regarding the fall of Egypt – Ezekiel 32 • These ended their world as they knew it, but was not an end to the whole world

  50. This Generation • All the language up to verse 34 of Matthew 24 is about the coming of the Lord in judgment on Jerusalem • That very generation would see it all The final fall of Jerusalem took place in AD 70
