  2. Citizenship • Citizenship is when a citizen has the rights and privileges named in the constitution. • Bill of Rights- In 1789, the constitution was changed to make sure citizens had their freedoms and rights.

  3. Bill of Rights • Freedom to vote • Freedom of religion • Freedom of speech • Freedom of the press • Protection of those accused of crimes

  4. Responsibilities of Citizens • Take time to vote • Serve on a jury • Obey laws • Pay taxes • Respect others

  6. Showing Good Citizenship in the Classroom Top four rules that our group voted were most important for our classroom: • Do not bully. • Help others when they ask for help. • Look at your own work. • Do not talk while others are talking.

Why is voting important? • You have a voice in government. • It shows good citizenship. • You should have a vote of what you would like to see happen in your classroom. • We will have a better classroom. • Our vote will help others in the classroom. • Our choices will make the community a better place to live.

  8. Why is following rules important? • It helps keep the community safe. It keeps people from getting hurt. • It helps keep people’s feelings from getting hurt. • To have order and organization

What happens when rules are not followed? • You could hit someone at a red light because you did not stop at the red light. • There would be confusion. • The class would be loud and we would not be able to learn. • People would be calling other people bad names. • People could hurt each other. • We would not know what to do. • It would not be fun in the classroom.

Showing Good Citizenship at a Grocery Store • Help someone put his groceries away. • Pick up a mess if you drop something. • Put things back where they belong. • Give someone money if they can not pay. • Be respectful to others. • Be kind. • Don't talk too loud. • Don’t stand too close to someone in the checkout line. • Don’t hit someone with your cart.

Differences Between Good and Bad Citizens Good citizens do: • Recycle • Pay taxes • Vote • Serve on Jury • Respect the views and opinions of other citizens • Attend school • Respect the environment • Help keep the community safe • Good citizens do not: • Litter • Destroy property • Do not respect the environment • Argue with others • Commit crimes • Skip school • Bully other students • Skip jury duty
