  2. How do we save our youth? How can we lower crime and substance abuse rates in youth, reduce dropout rates, lower obesity and combat crises among youth? By enrolling children in programs sponsored by National Boys & Girls Clubs of America!

  4. Research Shows • More than 15 million school-age children are on their own after school. This equals 26% of the school-age population. More than one million of these children are in grades K-5. (Afterschool Alliance, 2009) • Only 8.4 million K-12 children participate in after school programs. (Afterschool Alliance, 2009) • The hours between 3-6pm are the peak hours for juvenile crime and experimentation with drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and sex. (Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, 2002) • Nine in 10 Americans want all children to have a safe place to go with organized activities after school. However only 76% of Americans agree that officials should increase funding for after school programs. (Lake, Snell, Perry & Associates Inc., 2009)

Benefits of Participating in After School Programs • Teens who do not participate in afterschool programs are nearly 3 times more likely to skip classes, use marijuana or other drugs and are more likely to drink, smoke & engage in sex. (YMCA of the USA, March 2001) • Research shows that afterschool programs who use evidence based approaches were consistent in producing multiple benefits for youth, including improvements in personal, social and academic skills. (The Collaborative for Academic, Social, & Emotional Learning, 2007) • Parents miss an average of eight days of work per year due to a lack of afterschool care. Decreased worker productivity related to this costs businesses up to $300 billion per year. (Community, Families & Work Program at Brandeis University, 2004)

Boys & Girls Clubs of America • Boys & Girls Clubs are located in all 50 states, the Virgin Islands & Puerto Rico as well as on military bases worldwide. • Potentially 4.5 million children can be reached by Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide. • 1,400 of the 3,700 Boys & Girls Clubs are located inside schools. • 19% of club members are between the ages of 11 and 12 years. • Children ages 6-18 years can participate in programs.

  7. Boys & Girls clubs provide character building activities and a safe place for children daily. Specialized programs focus on meeting specific needs in a community. Some of these are: • Delinquency & Gang Prevention/Intervention • Latino Outreach • Youth for Unity • Teen Initiative • Family PLUS: Parents Leading, Uniting, Serving • Club Tech • Traditional programs are in Sports, Health, Arts, Character & Leadership and Education & Career.

Umpqua Valley Boys & Girls Club • Hours are 2:30-6:30 pm on school days although on early release school days they are closed. • On staff in-service day for schools the B&G club is open from 12:30-6:30pm. • During the summer months they are open from 11:30-5:30 pm. • It costs $52 a year for a member to attend. The summer week long camps cost an extra $75 a piece.

Umpqua Valley Boys & Girls Club UVBG offers the following programs locally • Power Hour is for 1st -6th graders, it encourages them to become more successful in school by becoming self directed learners. • The Books & Friends Club: is a buddy reading program that includes parents & school involvement & provides rewards for reading. • Scholar Club: is for members in 7th – 12th grades. It helps them to be more successful in school and supports members to achieve their academic and career goals.

  10. Local Programs Continued • NetSMART: is for members 6-12 years old. It teaches them about using the internet and the dangers that are associated with the internet so that they don’t become victims. • Project Learn is a partnership with JC Penney to improve academics. • For Sports & Recreation there is a games room league which includes a chess club. There are daily activities and games offered in the game room for members of all ages. • The B&G Club adopted the local Roseburg Sports Program to provide programs for members in 3rd-6th grades. Some sports are football, volleyball, and basketball.

Local Programs Continued • There are weekly craft projects and holiday arts. • The monthly Fine Arts program encourages artistic expression for members of all ages in mixed media and drama. • The Sunshine Club gets together once a week to create masterpieces for donors and others in the community. • Triple Play: teaches members about healthy eating & keeping fit. • Passport to Manhood: Teaches responsibility and reinforces positive behavior in males.

Local Programs Continued • SMART Moves: helps youth resist premature sexual activity. • Junior Leaders Program: these members provide 40 hours of volunteer community service. • Member of the Month & Member of the Year are used to promote family, academic performance, spiritual values, life goals and poise & public speaking.

Local Summer Programs • There are weekly camps, last summer there were 21 camps in: Science; Art; Exercise; Nature; Animals; Fairies, Dragons & Knights; and Water activities. • Sports camps were in soccer, golf, martial arts, tennis, zumba dance, lacrosse, snorkeling, volleyball & football. • Members went on field trips to: Mercy Hospital, the Umpqua Valley Arts Festival, the Show & Shine for vintage cars, Fishing, Camp Shriver, the Douglas County Fair, the Renaissance Fair, SPLASH and played disc golf.

  15. Local Parent Comments • Me: What do you like most about the B&G Club: SH: It is a safe environment, there are planned activities and he gets a snack. • Me: What does your son like the most? SH: The variety of activities and that they have computers he can use. • Me: What do you like least about the B&G Club: SH: They have an open door policy which means members can leave when they choose and she thinks the computers need to be better monitored. • Me: Anything else? SH: I appreciate the way they reach out and involve the community with the kids.
