  1. The Kate Greenaway Medalwas set up in 1956 in honor of the English artists and illustrator, Kate Greenaway. Kate Greenaway (1846-1901)

  2. Judging is done by a panel of 12 children’s librarians from the CILIP’s Youth Libraries Group. Through 2012 there have been 54 Medals given in 57 years (1955-2012). In 1955 and 1958 no eligible book was considered suitable to receive the award! 14 different illustrators have won 2 of the 53 Greenaway Medals. Illustrator Gail Haley won the 1971 Caldecott for A Story a Story and the 1976 Greenaway for The Post Office Cat. The Kate Greenaway award is the United Kingdom’s oldest & most prestigious children’s book award! Given annually it recognizes “distinguished illustration in a book for children.” (Wikipedia) Given by CILIP-the Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals.

The Kate Greenaway MedalCriteria • Book must be published originally for young people or children. • First publication must be in the UK. • Text (if any) must be in English or in Dual Language (one must be English). • An illustrator may win more than once. • The book must be of outstanding artistic quality. • There should be a lasting visual impression. • Judges should look at the artistic style, the format, the synergy of illustration & text, the visual experience.

  4. Dogger Voted the all time favorite by the people of the UK In June 2007 Dogger, written & illustrated by Shirley Hughes, was voted the UK’s favorite Greenaway Medal winner of all time. Dogger originally won in 1977.
