  2. The Need for Career/Life Planning We guide our boys and girls to some extent through school, then drop them into this complex world to sink or swim as the case may be. Yet there is no part of life where the need for guidance is more emphatic than in the transition from school to work - the choice of a vocation, adequate preparation for it, and the attainment of efficiency and success. (Frank Parsons)

Traditional Assumptions • There are a series of individual attributes or traits that draw people to certain occupations. • These attributes or traits are pivotal to effective and desired decision-making. • Occupations that match the vocational interest of individuals are accessible to them. • Occupations are stable enough in their characteristics for assessment instruments that match the traits of individuals with occupational characteristics are useful over time. • Once secured individuals have the capability to stay involved in desired occupations or career trajectories.

  6. CCC SERVICES One of AOU aims for its students is to prepare them for their future careers and help them face the challenges of the Omani job Market. The Center for Career Counseling, which is responsible for improving students’ skills in the various future work fields, builds on a number of strategies and will be involved in many activities and exercises that will increase students’ abilities to face the challenges of the Oman job Market. First, the office provides individual and group counseling of current students and Future graduates. Also, it organizes Workshops and Seminars on job search techniques, self-marketing skills, providing access to employers’ reference files and occupational information. In addition, the office will maintain and update a vacancy list of current jobs in the market and will establish links with employers through the career fair and various presentations organized by CCC. Moreover, it will create a Career Guide manual for use by potential graduates. In accordance with current working life requirements, the Center for Career Counseling will select on-line techniques to present helpful facilities. Students will be able to visit the office website where they can find all the information which is related to the office itself and to them as well.

  7. What is career counseling • Counseling is the means by which one person helps another through purposeful conversation. • Counseling is a method of identifying practical solution to an identified problem.

  8. Need for career counseling To survive in this competitive environment in world, it is not important to be the best, but also to keep evolving to say the best.

  9. Components in Career Counseling a. Career Planning: Career profile / path, develops performance, stress management, etc., b. Career Management: Training, skill enhancement programmes etc.

The goals to achieve in Guidance 1.Exploring self 2.Determining Values 3.Setting goals 4.Explore the world of work 5.Improving efficiency 6.Building relationship 7.Accepting responsibility for the future To excel in the above factors, one has to have proper guidance and motivation in an appropriate manner
