In June 2006, Dr. Rosemary Goodyear's team proposed a set of indicators for local councils to monitor community outcomes, as mandated by the Local Government Act 2002. This initiative focuses on cultural, economic, environmental, and social wellbeing, responding to the increasing demand for regional information. Statistics New Zealand, in partnership with local groups, aims to create a robust and reliable set of indicators accessible online. Feedback from councils is crucial for ensuring the comprehensiveness of these environmental indicators and for obtaining necessary data.

The Local Government Act 2002 • Requires local Councils to monitor, measure and report progress three yearly against community outcomes • Look at: Cultural, Economic Environmental &Social wellbeing • Results in increased demand for information at regional, district and city level.
Statistics New Zealand’s approach • Has developed a nucleus set of indicators, in conjunction with groups such as Canterbury Community Plans group. • Proposes to have this set of indicators available free on the website • Ensure that indicators will be robust, reliable and comparable.
Indicator set • Some councils responded favourably to the approach but Statistics New Zealand would like more feedback. • Are the set of environmental indicators comprehensive enough? • Are there any further indicators that should be included? • Advice on obtaining data.
