LAUNCH THE NETWORK OF LABORATORIES “LABONET” The IAEA organized a Consultancy meeting with 6 participants in Q1 2009 All of them are being considered as “Centres of Excellence” in RW characterization because of their previous cooperation with the IAEA (Three consultants are from the actual ENTRAP Steering Committee and the other three from countries with mature characterization programs ).

  3. OBJECTIVES OF LABONET • Coordinate support to organizations or Member States with less advanced programmes for characterization of low and intermediate-level waste, by making available the relevant skills, knowledge, managerial approaches and expertise from Member States with operating characterization laboratories. • Organise an expanded range of training and demonstration activities providing hands-on, user-oriented experience and disseminating proven analytical procedures. • Facilitate sharing and exchange of knowledge and experience amongst organizations with characterization facilities in operation or in design stage ; and • Create a forum in which expert’s advice and technical guidance may be provided on the Agency’s programme in the area of low-level waste management

PARTICIPATION • Members : Laboratories that have demonstrated a large experience in low and intermediate level waste characterization, a record of excellence in a wide range of areas, facilities suitable for demonstration and/or training and a willingness to share their experience through LABONET, will be identified as “LABONET Members” and recognized by the Agency as “Centres of Excellence” in RW characterization. • Participants: Laboratories that have responsibility for the characterization of RW , are actively engaged in planning or implementation of laboratories, and who are willing to participate in the activities of LABONET will be identified as “LABONET Participants”.

  5. ACTIVITIES -proposed • Hosting by Members of training courses, fellowships or scientific visits. • Provision by Members of suitably qualified and experienced individuals to support Participants by means of on-site education and training, workshops, peer reviews or other expert missions. • Providing qualified peers amongst the Members and Participants of LABONET to support the Agency’s efforts on peer reviews and technical support. • Provision of expertise to allow the Agency to progress its work programme in subject matter areas • Promoting the use of fellowships, exchanges, coaching and mentoring, on an organizational and an individual level for the transfer of knowledge and experience. • Organising seminars/conferences on selected topics.

  6. FUTURE SCHEDULE FOR LABONET • Technical meeting to prepare the final Term of Reference (April 2010) • Official IAEA letter to be sent to potential Members and Participants • Presentation of LABONET to the MS and the media (flyer) • Creation of Website. • Inauguration meeting in Vienna to formally launch LABONET in presence of both Members and Participants
