Educational Workshop • This instructional event is an educational workshop that will be presented to teenage mothers. • The goal of the instruction is to educate young mothers on financial aid and college options. • Attendees will learn to complete a federal financial aid application and the first steps in applying to colleges.
Hour One – Gain Attention • Welcome the attendees. • Inform attendees about the objectives of the workshop. • Interact with the young moms. • Ask each mom to introduce herself and share her story. • Share story of my struggles as a teenage mother. • Show MS PowerPoint of my struggles as a teenage mother.
Materials for Hour One • MS PowerPoint presentation on Debra McCoskey-Reisert's personal story of overcoming obstacles of teenage motherhood. • The PowerPoint presentation will be designed using one of the installed templates. Pictures and bullet points highlighting Debra’s story will be added. The file will be saved as a PowerPoint Show and be ready for the workshop.
Hours Two through Five: The Financial Aid Process • Explain financial aid options to the attendees. • Give handouts to attendees. • Show MS PowerPoint presentation on the federal financial aid process. • Show examples of correctly completed applications. • Guide the attendees in completing federal financial aid forms. • Allow for individual feedback for each attendee. Corrections will be made at this time. Other attendees will enjoy a break. • Review the process with the group.
Materials for Hours two-Five • MS PowerPoint presentation on the federal financial aid process. • The PowerPoint presentation will be created using a pre-installed template. Slides will be created that include: the various types of aid and each step of the financial aid process. The final presentation will be saved as a PowerPoint Show and will be ready for the workshop.
Hours six ad Seven: College Options • Show video about online college opportunities. • Explain the benefits of distance education. • Hand out Western Governors University’s promotional packets. • Explain the WGU model. • Discuss the four colleges that make up WGU. • Show MS PowerPoint on the first steps to contact an enrollment counselor. • Discuss several other online college options.
Materials for Hours Six and Seven • Using Go Animate, a video will be created on college options. This easy to use program allows for two animated characters to have a conversation. The video will be created by following simple prompts and include options for college, including WGU. • A MS PowerPoint presentation will be created showing the first steps of becoming a WGU student. The PowerPoint will be designed with a pre-installed template.
Hour Eight: Conclusion • Thank each attendee for participating. • Hand out business cards with contact information. • Ask each attendee to follow on Twitter. • Share link to reminder flashcards. • Dismiss the workshop.
Materials for Conclusion • Online Flashcards will be created using Flashcard Machine. The researcher will add terminology to the front of each flash card and the definition on the back. Flash Machine generates the flashcards after simply inputting data.
