  1. Irreversible Rakine Cycle P M V Subbarao Professor Mechanical Engineering Department I I T Delhi Modelling of All Deviations ……

  2. Ideal Rankine Cycle

  3. Actual Rankine Cycle

  4. Sources of deviations of actual cycles from ideal cycle • Heat transfer through the temperature difference between the thermal source and fluid passing through the steam generator unit; • Pressure drop in the steam generator (boiler) due to fluid frictional effects; • Pressure drops and heat losses to the surroundings associated with various components such as piping; • Pressure drops associated with throttling (e.g. for steam flow control);Fluid "frictional effects" as steam expands in the turbine; • Pressure drop in the condenser;Heat transfer through the temperature difference between fluid in the condenser and the thermal sink; • Fluid "frictional effects" where liquid is compressed in pumps; • Mixing of extracted steam and feedwater in open heaters; • Heat transfer between extraction steam and feedwater in closed heaters.

  5. Internal Irreversibilities Friction & Heat Losses External Irreversibilities Heat Tranfer & Combustion Classification of Irreversibilities Ideal Cycle

  6. Fossil Fuel Fired Boiler

  7. Major Components of Coal Fired Steam Generator

  8. Schematic of Coal Fired Steam Generator

  9. Coal Vs Oil Fired Steam Generator

  10. Steam and Gas Flow arrangement in a modern oil-fired Steam Generator

  11. Irreversibilities in Steam Generator • Overall Thermal Efficiency of a Power Plant is the ratio of power output to fuel power.

  12. Details of Basic Processes • Generation of Thermal Energy – Using Natural Resources. • Combustion Sciences. • Combustion Losses • Transfer of Thermal Energy to working fluid. • Science of Heat Transfer. • Incomplete cooling of exhaust gasses. • Heat Losses from surface of Steam generator.
