  1. Introduction to Ecology

  2. I. What is ecology? • is the study of the relationships between living things and their environment. • All organisms in an environment are related. To change one organism would affect many organisms.

  3. II. Organization of Ecology A. BIOSPHERE: Part of the Earth where all life exists. From about 8km above Earth’s surface to below the ocean floor. ***Organisms are not equally distributed in the biosphere

  4. Biosphere

  5. B. ECOSYSTEM: all the living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) parts in a given area. Ex. Frogs, turtles, lily pads, bass, algae, water, rocks, soil

  6. A marsh ecosystem

  7. C. COMMUNITY: all the living (biotic) organisms in an ecosystem. Communities form a system of production, consumption, & decomposition. Ex. Frogs, turtles, lily pads, bass, algae

  8. D. POPULATION: a group of individuals of a single species that occupies a common area & share common resources. Ex. Frog population

  9. HABITAT: the surroundings/environment of a particular organism. Ex. Frogs on a lily pad

  10. Everglades, Florida-habitat

  11. NICHE: an organism’s job OR way of life. Ex: What is the purpose of toads and frogs in a garden?
