introduction • On Friday, we went outing and visited 2 places which is BalaiPemuda and Surabaya gift shop GaeKonTok. Finally we categorized Surabaya visual art into Clothes, Painting, Handcraft, Statue.

logos • Recently, Surabaya has been using many logos to promote what Surabaya have. For now schools, organizations has been using many TuguPahlawanin their logo. But some gift shop, they prefer use Suro and Boyo statue because they think Suro and Boyo statue is more famous as a logo for Surabaya. Next slide we will show you some school, organizations and shop logo that use TuguPahlawan. Except for Sparkling Surabaya.

Paintings Mr. M Sochieb

Mr. m sochieb • One of the greatest painter in Surabaya is Mr. M Sochieb. The themes of his paintings is about the spirit of Surabaya citizen against the Dutch colonialism on 10 November 1945. In 1965 he started his exhibition for his paintings. Every time he has an exhibition, he starts it on 10 November. No one exactly know why, Mr. Sochieb was born in 1931. When he is 31 years old, he started painting.

This painting describes Surabaya society with a chest as a shield sacrifice for the sake of their nation. They dared to climb the tower of the hotel by waving the Red-White.

This painting shows war without strategy is a waste. Death without meaning. We are aware of his own strength. Enemy ambush, seized the fortress.

The war has cost human values, destruction, misery and death. Although all gone in waste however, for the right of free land, there are still requirements without sacrifice, namely: "The Way of Peace"

Clothes Udeng, Modern T-Shirt, Bonek, CakNing

T-shirt (modern) This is the sample of modern T-Shirt that we found from GaeKonTok. It is identical cartoon and always shows anything that represents Surabaya. They design it in a cartoon way to make it interesting. The example in this picture is identical RujakCingur that people cant find it anywhere except in Surabaya. It is made from cotton and a very comfortable smooth cloth. The characteristic is they always uses cartoon for modern effect and uses many different color not like Udeng. Their picture is interesting to attract people. People style it simple like Surabaya style, T-shirt in general and long or half short pants. You can find it in GaeKonTok gift shop in Jl. Klampis.

This hat is called Udeng and originally design from Surabaya. It shows Surabaya identity because of its color that is similar to each from. The triangle behind to show that guys are proud wearing the one similar color. They believe if “Udeng” guys wearing uses many different materials and shapes, the unique their life is. • Chacteristic: • Always have the typical triangle behind the hat • Color is always similar to each other (one theme) • CakSuroboyo usually wear it certain and traditional ceremony. Sometimes they use as an accessories daily to keep tradition and to respect gods. • We can find it in every souvenir store in Surabaya. BalaiPemuda sell Udeng too. Udeng (Traditional)

Bonektshirt This is another t-shirt that is famous for Surabaya supporters in soccer which is Persebaya. Persebaya is famous for the fans “Bonek” which means BondoNekad. Persebaya it self uses TuguPahlawan symbol and Suro and Boyo statue. Usually Bonek wore the t-shirt when Persebaya is playing a match againts other city teams. We can find and support Bonek t-shirts by buying it near the soccer field where Persebaya playing. There are also Bonek t-shirts in Surabaya gift shop and general t-shirt shops.

kebaya This is the traditional clothes for Surabaya’s girl. It is simplem just sarung Batik with Kebaya. It is full of flowers and again the Batik is usual color and only used one themed color. It is made from thick cloth and flower detailing in the Kebaya. The Kebaya is made from smooth and thin cloth.

Souvenirs Glass, Key Chains, Bags, Handcraft form woods

Key chains This is another useful way of promoting Surabaya through making souvenirs. This is a printed key chains that use many different kinds of symbol that represents Surabaya. The example is Semanggi leaves and the old symbol of Surabaya’s Suro and Boyo with a lion beside. We can find it in gift shop or you can make it yourself by printing and cresting your own designs that represents Surabaya. We think it is better if the key chains is not from plastic but from wood and we can carving.

Souvenirs (modern) This is the example of souvenirs that is useful to promote Surabaya. It is a glass that uses glass that can broke easily. It uses many motif like Suro and Boyo symbol to promote Surabaya. People usually uses symbols and buy it to remember their trip to Surabaya. You can find it in GaeKonTok gift shop in JL Klamplis.

Wood handcraft Basically handicraft Surabaya is a sculpture that represent Surabaya culture. This sculpture use small to medium size. This handcraft Surabaya materials produce by the foundation of DarulSukorejoPasuruan District. There are around 20 types of handicraft sculpture for example bicycle, bicycle Thailand, India bicycle, tricycle cart, rickshaw China, Vespa, ox carts to motocross and many more. This handicraft has inspired Jogjakarta crafts. It started 1.5 years ago. The first exhibition of this Surabaya sculpture was in Friday 7-October-2011 in Grand city Surabaya. The characteristics is always 2 people especially girls sitting wearing Kebaya that is called as CakNing clothes. it is sculptured when 2 girls was fighting and a girl helping a man. It is usually a girl sitting. It can be find in many traditional gift shop like Mirota.

Statues TuguPahlawan, jalesvevjayamahe, SurodanBoyo , JokoDolok

TUGU pahlawan Tugupahlawan is another statue that Surabaya recently use for their Batik. It is another statue that defines Surabaya after The Suro and Boyo statue. People usually went to TuguPahlawansurabaya to know more about Surabaya tempoedoeleand now. The year 1920 there is still no TuguPahlawan. It is really tall and straight and like usual white color. You can find TuguPahlawan near pasar atom which is in the JembatanMerah and Kya-Kya area. People use it as the logo of Surabaya.

jalesveva_jayamahe We can find this JalevevaJayamahe in the port to Kalimantan here in Surabaya. It is really big that is it bigger than the ship that will go back and forth to island. Is it made by like steel mixed with rocks that mixed with glass to. It is not complete rocks and cement like TuguPahlawan. It is just a statue like liberty but not as famous as TuguPahlawan or Suro and Boyo statue. It is usual like all statue full of square and people standing.

SURodanboyo This is the very famous statue that defines Surabaya. Based on the information, this symbol has been change 3 times up to now. Is is made from brink, rock and cement. You can find this near the zoo in Surabaya. People usually take pictures and directly went to the zoo if it is holiday. It is typical Surabaya using lines.

Jokodologa statue inform of buddha from 13th century. JokoDolog is a buddhist statue build in the year 1289 to honor the funeral of King Kertanegara. It is believed to be carried to Surabaya 300 years ago. In front of the statue there are a big stone with Javanese literature containing the inscription of JokoDolog. It can be found on Taman Aspari street.

Semanggi batik khassurabaya This is one of the famous Batik from Surabaya. Here we can see the semanggi leaves and famous suro and boyo is fighting. It is made from cloth is thick one. It doesn’t use many color llikemadura but surabaya’s batik characteristic is they only use one theme of color. We can find it in Batik House.

Batik mangrove This is a special batik motif-based of mangroves so we called it "Batik Mangrove" The color that been used for this Batik is more of bright colors like orange, yellow, red, purple and brown in general. Batik mangrove has a specific designs with the motif of flora and fauna that live in the mangrove ecosystem like leaves, flowers, fruits, as well as animals like fish, crabs and shrimp. each motif of mangrove comes with different name based on the motif in specific. The characteristic of this type of visual art is they used small motif and repeat it more than usual batik and used it over and over.

Analyzing - lala • We didn’t find much info about Surabaya visual art that real comes from Surabaya.But from what me and my group notice, Surabaya use many typical things like only uses 1 theme color and use lines and shapes especially wavy, straight and rectangles. Nowadays surabaya has been using many TuguPhlawan statues as symbol and surrounded by Semanggi leaves which is real from Surabaya. Tradition of design house that up to know still been use is old building is art novo style. It is a door that is like window from glass. So there is no window instead they use doors. Right now there is no painters that paints certain tradition and typical of surabaya like Suro and boyo statue, tugupahlawan, semanggi leaves but the paint most of abstract. There are many things that Surabaya always use as their tradition. I guess it is important that should keep that tradition because with that tradition is the thing that defines Surabaya.

Analyzing-Aldo • Actually we from our excursion we find some new Surabaya tradition. For example udeng and semanggi. When we have found that tradition of Surabaya we start searching the information of another visual art. Like paintings we find painter M Sochieb. He paint a painting about Surabaya war.

Analyzing-Michelle • Surabaya visual art is important because if we don’t preserve our visual art, our visual art could be taken by other country and we should create more because it can attract visitors to go to Surabaya.

Analyzing - kevin • I think keeping Surabaya’s visual art is important for me. It is important to attract people attention to love Surabaya city and know that Surabaya is rich of tradition. Surabaya’s culture is different from other city that the material are different and they use many different symbol one of them that are famous is Suro and Boyo symbol.

Conclusion • Surabaya is rich of tradition but the only thing is we can’t show it effectively and properly. I think we all should help promoting Surabaya using many different ways so that now Surabaya can be define easily and be different from other city’s identity. It is important to keep our tradition to because it is what we called city identity so we should keep it and use it. Yes, people can modify but the point of modify is to only decorate and make it better to improve but to create new symbol and replace. From now on that we know keeping traditions is important, we should improve and even promote more by designing and promoting to other city.
