Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry • Rom 15:14 NKJV“Now I myself am confident concerning you, my brethren, that you also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another.” • The epilogue to the Gentile believers begins • The early Roman church is positioned to influence the world. • The doctrine of the epistle now stated (see Rom 1:8-10 to put this into context) - Paul gives them high praise as an encouragement of what he anticipates (hopes) will follow. • he has been persuaded – perfect passive indicative • goodness – agathōsynē, notice root word • ‘also’ presumably compares them to himself • Paul appears to feel that his presence is not needed. • Similar uplifting/encouraging messages were provided to other churches: Philippi, Colosse, Thessalonica 1 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel

  2. Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry • Rom 15:15,16 NASB“But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of the grace that was given me from God,to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the gospel of God, so that {my} offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.” • Other examples of Paul’s boldness in addressing the Romans • Rom 6:12,19; 8:9; 11:17,18; 14:3,4,10 • The basis of this boldness – God’s grace for ministry of the gospel (as a priest unto the Gentiles – Acts 22:21) • hierourgeō: ILG - administering in sacred service • Reflect on Rom 11:17 – Gentiles grafted in • The principle - 1 Tim 4:6 ‘If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith 2 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel

  3. Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry and of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed.’ • The reminder to each and every believer – • 1 Pet 4:11 ‘If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.’ • Is this a special dose of sanctification? • No, it’s for all of us - and once and for all • Heb 10:10 ‘By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.’ • Acts 20:32 ‘So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.’ 3 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel

  4. Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry • Rom 15:17 NASB“Therefore in Christ Jesus I have found reason for boasting in things pertaining to God.” • Therefore – see v 16 • boast is a better translation than glory through • What does boasting in things pertaining to God look like? • See II Cor 11:16-12:1 • Heb 5:1 ‘For every high priest taken from among men is appointed for men in things pertainingto God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.’ • Our pride is unacceptable – II Cor 3:4-6 • Rom 15:18,19 NKJV “For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not accomplished through me, in word and deed, to make the Gentiles obedient, in mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God, so that from Jerusalem and round about to Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. 4 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel

  5. Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry • Paul wants to avoid speaking about anything but what God has done through him, and even of that he’s not certain. • Prov 25:14 ‘Whoever falsely boasts of giving is like clouds and wind without rain.’ • II Cor 10:10-18 is worth noting here • 2 Cor 3:1-3 ‘Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or do we need, as some others, You are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read by all men; clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spiritof the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart.’ • Col 3:17 ‘And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.’ • 1 John 3:18 ‘My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.’ 5 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel

  6. Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry • Notice the manner in which Paul ministered • through mighty signs and wonders • mighty, dynamis - inherent power • And, this was by the power of the Spirit of God • 1 Thess 1:5 ‘For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.’ • 1 Cor 2:4 ‘And my speech and my preaching werenot with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,’ • Let’s compare this to ‘our’ ministry today. • Paul’s journeys – Jerusalem and then Illyricum • Illyricum – NW of Macedonia, N of Greece, E of the Adriatic Sea • Today part of Croatia • The most distant of Paul’s journeys at that time 6 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel

  7. Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry 7 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel

  8. Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry • and he preached the gospel fully • 2 Tim 4:17 ‘But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.’ • Rom 15:20,21 NASB “And thus I aspired to preach the gospel, not where Christ was {already} named, so that I would not build on another man's foundation;but as it is written, ‘they who had no news of him shall see, and they who have not heard shall understand.’” • Why do you think Paul is concerned about another man’s ministry? • Is I Cor 3:9-11 true or not? • Does this remind you of anyone else? • Apollos is Corinth? 8 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel

  9. Romans 15:14-21 God’s Grace in Paul’s Ministry • How about minding your own business? • I Thess 4:9-12 • Paul was a very special evangelist • Gong where no other had been • No formal welcomes - in fact, threats • Having the right credentials • Acts 14:3 ‘Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands.’ • spoken of Paul and Barnabas • The quote in v 20 is from Isaiah 52:15 ‘So shall He sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths at Him; For what had not been told them they shall see, And what they had not heard they shall consider.’ • Do you think that Paul thought Isaiah was speaking of him? 9 Sept 2, 2007 Bob Eckel
