  2. Introduction With the growing cost of petroleum and environmental problems that are associated with it, we need to find alternate fuel sources. Fuel sources that are renewable and does not require major design changes in the equipment that uses it. We also need to lessen our dependency on other countries for our fuel. One of these fuel sources is BioDiesel.

  3. Task Your research company is one of the finalists that the Town of Wilmington has chosen to research and report whether it is cost effective and in the town’s best interest to switch to BioDiesel.

  4. The Process Your job in this Web Quest is to explore BioDiesel and its properties using on-line resources. You will also find out how the use of these fuels can reduce air pollution and provide other benefits. To demonstrate this answer the following set of questions about BioDiesel. • What is biodiesel? • Is biodiesel used as a pure fuel or is it blended with petroleum diesel? • Is it approved for use in the United States? • How do biodiesel emissions compare to petroleum diesel? • Can you use biodiesel in existing diesel engines? • Can you use biodiesel in gas engines? • Is biodiesel better for human health than petroleum diesel? • What is biodiesel made from? • What are the benefits of using biodiesel? • What are some negative effects of using biodiesel? Once the research has been completed: Produce a Power Point Presentation on the results. The presentation should have at least 15 slides. The Power Point Presentation should be made to convince the Town of Wilmington to switch to biodiesel.

  7. Conclusion Congratulations, through your hard work and presentation, you have persuaded the Town of Wilmington to switch from diesel to biodiesel in all of their equipment. With further research and exploration we can find other ways to become less dependent on fossil fuels and help reduce the environmental impacts of the fuels that we use.

Bioengineering Technologies Central Concept: Bioengineering technologies explore the production of mechanical devices, products, biological substances, and organisms to improve health and/or contribute improvements to our daily lives. 7.2 Describe and explain adaptive and assistive bioengineered products, e.g., food, bio-fuels, irradiation, integrated pest management. 6. Transportation Technologies Central Concept: Transportation technologies are systems and devices that move goods and people from one place to another across or through land, air, water, or space. 6.1 Identify and compare examples of transportation systems and devices that operate on or in each of the following: land, air, water, and space. Objectives (Desired Student Outcomes): Introduce the concepts behind Biodiesel, and allow students to accept Biodiesel as a feasible renewable fuel source. Economic and Environmental impacts are determining factors in transportation fuels used by fleets and individuals.
