  2. Causes of the Mexican American War The issue of TEXAS Texans had broken the chains of oppression, and won their freedom… or so they thought!

  3. The issue of TEXAS The Mexican government did not respect or recognize Texan Independence. They thought Texas was a rebellious and would be reclaimed!

  4. The issue of TEXAS But Texas WAS in debt. A LOT of debt! (Don’t forget, it was run by felons and bank robbers!) Who could they turn to??? They certainly didn’t want to go back to Mexican Rule….

  5. Causes of the Mexican American War We’re coming, Texas!!! 2. Interference of the United States The United States, who has had their eye on Texas, offers to bail them out of their debts! James Polk is President of the United States and sees this as a wonderful thing- expanding the United States.

  6. Causes of the Mexican American War 3. Annexation of Texas Texas requested to be *ANNEXED* by the United States. To Annex means to join. Northerners Opposed because they felt another slave state would give the SOUTH more power U.S.A! The South Approved because they wanted another Slave state

  7. Santa Anna warns the United States that the annexation of Texas to the United States, would be the same as a declaration of war against Mexico!

  8. Mexico does not share in the Enthusiasm! Texas was excited because now they had a big, strong protector from a possible Mexican Invasion!

  9. “The lives of Mexicans have been sacrificed in this cause; and a domestic question, which should be reserved for bloodless debate in our own country, is transferred to fields of battle in a foreign land!”

  10. Causes of the Mexican American War 3. Skirmishes with Polk’s army WAR! President Polk sent more than 3000 Troops to settle disputes with Mexico. They wanted to be forceful, and avoid battle. The troops went under General Zachary Taylor. They were attacked and several Americans were killed. This gave Polk the support to declare War!

  12. War with Mexico While the United States declared war with Mexico, California also declared independence from Mexico. Because they had a symbol of a Bear on their flag this was known as the Bear Flag Revolt

  13. Effects of the Mexican American War Mexican Cession included several modern day states including California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. The Gadsden purchase Comes a few Years Later

  14. Effects of the Mexican American War Treaty of Guadalupe- Hidalgo 1. Mexico gave up its claim to Texas and recognized the Rio Grande as the southern border of Texas 2. Mexico gave New Mexico and California, which together made up almost half of its territory to the United States. 3. The United States paid Mexico 15 Million for total land obtained. 4. The United State agreed to pay 10 million dollars for addition land  Gadsden purchase
