  2. What is DARPA challenge? • DARPA • Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency • Agency of the United States Department of Defense responsible for the development of new technology for use by the military • DARPA challenge • Develop autonomous cars • Involves cutting-edge technology • First prize: 2 750 000 dollars

  3. Video explanations

  4. 2004 DARPA grand challenge • Run 227.2 km in the American desert • Best performance: 11.8 km by CMU!!!

  5. 2005 DARPA grand challenge • 212.4 km in less than 10 hours in the desert • Four other vehicles successfully completed the race • Winner: "The Stanford Racing Team“ during about 7 hours

  6. 2007 DARPA urban challenge • 96 km in urban environment in less than 6 hours • Some rules: • Entirely autonomous, using only GPS and sensors • Obey the California state driving laws. • Operate in rain and fog, with GPS blocked. • Avoid collision with vehicles and other objects such as carts, bicycles, traffic barrels • Autonomous parking, perform U-turns,…

  7. Exemple: intersection

  8. Exemple: merging into traffic

  9. Exemple: re-planning
