  5. High Middle Ages—Trade • As trade increased, banking became a big industry because people needed loans to make investments in trade • Manufacturing of products began • Guilds (associations of skilled workers) were formed to protect the quality of their work & the prices they received

  7. High Middle Ages—Cities • Farmers learned the three-field system: leave one field “fallow” so it can regains its nutrients • Many peasant farmers were able to leave the hard life on the manor & escape into the new cities where they could train to become skilled craftsmen

High Middle Ages—Universities • Cultural diffusion brought new interest in learning • Universities started popping up all over Western Europe • Members of middle class began learning how to read & write • Now that more European could read, interest grew about ideas of Greece & Rome (Classicism)
