The BEC (Business Education Compact) is a local non-profit organization established in 1984, dedicated to enhancing student achievement and professional teacher development through proficiency-based teaching and learning. Our STEM.Connect initiative fosters partnerships between community sponsors and local schools, targeting underserved 4th and 5th graders to ignite interest in math and science. By connecting students to meaningful internships and volunteer experiences, we aim to impact their future STEM career paths and strengthen community engagement in education.

What is STEM Connect? Partnerships between community sponsors and local schools Increase interest in Math, Science … all subjects! Connect students to the world of work Target 4th and 5th grade youth identified as underserved
Why target 4th & 5th grade classrooms? Underserved students have less access and/or exposure to science related education Research shows that declined interest in Math & Science begins in elementary school Meaningful experiences with STEM can impact students’ decision to pursue STEM in the future Teacher support and impact
Community Partners – Trained and Committed Support STEM Connect classrooms through four connections Get to know their classroom Attend on-site volunteer training at their organization
Connecting with the Classroom and Community • Connection 1 • Personal connection with volunteer(s) and teacher • Connection 2 • STEM Connect activity with the classroom • Connection 3 • Follow up activity • Volunteer comes back to the classroom • Connection 4 • Partner engages the entire school community • Partner attends a back-to-school night, host a science night with Mad Science, or another community engagement activity
