  2. How to Find Board Members Look for doers and managers Use existing connections Follow up with past students Identify established professional networks Build on existing relationships Bring principal in to let him/her know what business and thinking

  3. Making the Ask • Detail the value and importance of your work • Written description of board role • Visit at their place of work • Make the offer, specifying benefits and responsibilities • Accompany the board chair or other leader to make the ask

  4. Elect Officers and Set Goals • Officers should include chair, vice chair, secretary and treasurer • When setting goals outline operations • Set calendar • Define your committees • Elect members of committees

  5. Common Meeting Activities • Four things to consider in each meeting • Learn about the work to be done • An opportunity to learn from the board members • Network among yourselves • Opportunity to problem solve

  6. Productive Advisory Boards • Continue to tie back to the big picture • Send agenda at least three days in advanced • Set clear expectations • Spend time with new members to get them up to speed • Offer continuous education to keep everyone informed
