  3. Personal Life • Married Runia Pontsch • son Israel Zamir born 1929 • Separated from Runia when he moved to New York • Married German-Jewish immigrant Alma Wassermann in 1940 • Had a brother Israel Joshua Singer and sister Esther Kreitman

  5. Awards • National Book Award for children's literature for A Day of Pleasure: Stories of a Boy Growing Up in Warsaw in 1969 • Nobel Prize in literature in 1978 • Gold Medal for Fiction in 1989

  6. Later Life • Continued to write for Daily Forward • Published new material until death • Died in 1991 after a series of strokes
