What is Cub Scouting? • Cub Scouting is a home- and neighborhood-centered program designed to support family life for boys in 1st through 5th grade • Each Cub Scout learns to respect his home, country, God, and other people and helps him to: • Learn new physical skills through sports, crafts, and games • Learn how to get along with others through group activities • Develop new mental skills such as writing and calculating • Develop personal independence

  11. Advancement Plan • The responsibility for a boy’s advancement lies with the family, not the Pack. Some advancements requirements are done at den meetings, but most are completed at home

  12. Advancement (1 of 3) • Tiger Rank • Specific for first-grade boys and their “adult partner.” • 15 activities to earn the Tiger Badge • Bobcat • All boys, regardless of age, earn the Bobcat badge • When a boy learns: • Cub Scout Promise • Law of the Pack • handshake, salute, sign, & motto • meaning of “Webelos”

  13. Advancement (2 of 3) • Wolf Rank • Specific for second-grade boys • 12 achievements to earn the Wolf Badge • Additional Electives for arrow points • Bear Rank • Specific for third-grade boys • 12 of 24 achievements to earn the Bear Badge • Additional Electives for arrow points

  16. Den Meetings • Dens meet once or more a month • Led by a den leader (usually a parent) • Assisted by other parents • Den meetings have games, crafts, stunts, songs, ceremonies, and FUN!

Pack & Committee Meetings • Pack Meetings occur once a month, normally on the 4th Wednesday at Oakmont Elementary • This is the climax of the month’s activities • Awards and Patches are awarded • All Cub Scout families attend • Committee Meetings are normally held on the 3rd Monday at Yogi’s Deli & Grill (4855 Bryant Irvin) • Adults Meeting - Open to all parents • Plan pack meetings and upcoming events • Select leaders, keep records, manage finances,...

Budgeting & Finances (1 of 2) • Our goal at Pack 565 is to provide a quality scouting experience with as little cost as possible to our members • Pack 565 is self-supporting • Although Pack expenses vary from year to year, we must always balance income and expenses at all times • We hold our main fund-raising effort each the fall • Popcorn Sales • All boys are encouraged to participate • Prizes and Patches

Budget/Finance Conclusion (2 of 2) • This covers the expenses of running the pack • Patches and awards for the Cubs • Pinewood derby cars • Fees and expenses for most pack events • Other minor expenses for running the pack • If you find yourself with questions about any financing item, or you would like to better understand funding and spending issues, please do not hesitate to contact our pack leadership

Everyone Can Help • We ask everyone to volunteer to do one thing! • If you can volunteer as a leader or co-leader that would be great! • If not, there are lots of other ways to help out in the Pack • Help at a den meeting or pack event • Teach a craft or sport • Provide refreshments at a den meeting • Just let us know what you can do • Please fill out the Talent & Skill Survey before you leave tonight.

Other things you can do • Have your son wear the appropriate uniform to all den and pack meetings or scout events • Make sure your son attends den meetings • Attend pack meetings and outings with your scout and cheer them on • Offer assistance to the den leader • Work with your son on any achievements that the den leaders asks you to complete at home

  27. Why I’m a Leader I’m not a Cub Scout Leader for the easy hours, high pay, parents’ gratitude, power or prestige. I’m a leader because I want the world for your son and mine, to be a world he can shape and help shape; a world of love and laughter, where he can show compassion. I want him to be able to look at the stars, a sunrise, a sunset, the work and world of man - - and feel their beauty inside himself I want to help him to learn to finish anything he starts and do it well and to guide him to know his worth with a deeper understanding of himself. I want to help shape men who have strength of character and are sensitive to the needs of others. I want them to be the best they can be. I’m giving of myself and my time. I reap rewards far beyond what I give. I receive for my children and future generations a better world. I am a Cub Scout leader because I care.
