  3. Do Now • The following data show the results of a survey asked to teens, “What would make you feel better about yourself?” They could choose more than one answer…

  4. Do Now • 49% say better grades • 38% say losing weight • 36% say bulking or toning up • 30% say better relationship with parents • 16% say fitting in with certain peers • 15% say I like myself the way I am • Do these results surprise you? Why or why not?

Benefits of High Self Esteem • Accepting yourself for who you are • Realistic view of strengths and weaknesses • Maintain a positive attitude • Form close relationships • Having high self esteem may lead to: • Eat well, exercise regularly, and avoid risky behaviors • Set goals • Ask for help • Bounce back quickly

  7. Risks of Low Self Esteem • Lack respect for themselves • Judge themselves harshly • Worry what others think of them • Put on an act • Insecure • Fear of failure • Having low self esteem may lead to: • Drug use, drop out of school, pregnant, eating disorders, violence, destructive behaviors

Childhood • Young children need support and encouragement from all family members • Succeeding at small, simple tasks helps to build self esteem • Most children enter school with high self esteem • However, it declines during elementary school • Compare themselves against other children • Negative feedback from teachers, parents, peers

  10. Adolescence • Normal for teens to be critical • But some teens are overly self conscious • Unattainable comparisonsresulting in their self esteem suffering

  11. Adulthood • Generally rises • Begin to accomplish goals and take control of their lives • Can keep things in proper perspective • In older adults (elderly), self esteem declines • Health problems, limited roles in society
