  1. Anti-Spam Tagging Al Lilianstrom

  2. Spam Tagging • The Computing Division is testing a Spam Tagging solution • Based on SpamAssassin • All incoming mail to the site will be scanned and tagged as necessary

  3. Spam Tagging – SpamAssassin • SpamAssassin™ is a mail filter to identify spam. • Using its rule base, it uses a wide range of heuristic tests on mail headers and body text to identify "spam", also known as unsolicited commercial email • http://spamassassin.org

  4. Spam Tagging - Scanning • Messages will be scanned and marked as spam by adding X-Headers if certain conditions are met. These conditions are set inside SpamAssassin. We will NOT be deleting mail identified as spam. • Mail clients should look for the 'X-Spam-Flag=Y' header to detect spam and move it to another folder with local filtering. We strongly urge people not to automatically delete spam as its possible valid email may accidentally get labeled as spam

  5. Spam Tagging – Sample Headers X-Spam-Flag: YES X-Spam-Checker-Version: SpamAssassin 2.61 (1.212.2.1-2003-12-09-exp) on hepa2.fnal.gov X-Spam-Level: ********* X-Spam-Status: Yes, hits=9.3 required=5.0 tests=GAPPY_SUBJECT,MISSING_MIMEOLE, PRIORITY_NO_NAME, RCVD_IN_BL_SPAMCOP_NET, RCVD_IN_DSBL, RCVD_IN_DYNABLOCK, RCVD_IN_SORBS autolearn=no version=2.61

  6. Spam Tagging – Listserv • The latest version of the Listserv software supports the ability to reject mail based on headers. We are testing this with the headers that SpamAssassin adds

  7. Spam Tagging – Testing • If you want to test this service change your mail gateway forwarding to <username>@hepa.fnal.gov • Please note – this service is not covered under any type of support structure at this time • We expect to go live with this service in February
