  2. What is a seed??? • Seeds are the products of sexual reproduction in most plants • A seed is a complete reproductive package that contains an embryo, a food supply, and a seed coat, which protects it from drying out

  3. Two major groups of seed-bearing plants • Angiosperms • Gymnosperms

  4. Angiosperms • are flowering plants • seeds form inside flowers • When mature, the seeds are enclosed in a case, such as a pod, or shell

  5. Gymnosperms • do not produce flowers • most produce seeds inside cones • Seeds have a coat that protects them from dehydration, but they are not enclosed in a case

  6. Sexual Reproduction in Angiosperms • Over one half of all known plant species are angiosperms – some are large producing large showy flowers, some are tiny and easily overlooked • Regardless of their size, all flowers have the same function, they contain the plant’s reproductive organs

  7. Sexual Reproduction in Angiosperms Cont.. • The female reproductive organ is called the pistil • The male reproductive organ is called the stamen
