  3. More ABOUT HER • Elderly woman • Often seem as evil and scary • She can fly • She travels inside a mortar • Unlike American witches, she uses her broom to sweep away evidence from her mortar, so no one would know where she is. • Friends with Koshchey the Deathless

  4. Where does she appear in Russian Culture? • She is known in Russian folklore as an evil witch and a hero as well. • She is a guardian spirit of the fountain of Waters of Life and Death. • She controls the wind, fire, water, and air in Old Russian forest. • She has three faithful servants

  5. Where does she appear in Russian Culture? • “Vasilisa the Beautiful.” which is a Russian tale about a girl who is sent to get wood from Baba Yaga’s hut but to get the wood she needs to complete a list of task. • She is not only a character in Russian tales but also in Polish and Czech stories

  6. WHAT KINDOF PERSON WAS SHE? • The “bad” guy • A hero • She is curious when people go close to her hut • People seek her out for help • It can be rare when she helps her guests out • She ages once a year when she is asked a question

Where does she live? • She lives in a hut in the forest • Her hut is a living thing that moves • It has large chicken legs and it has the ability to move whenever it wants • When it does move it runs or sprints • "Hut, hut, turn your back to the forest and your front to me". The phase would make the hut turn around and face the person on the ground like knocking.

What does she look like? • She has a large nose that scrapes the ceiling of her hut • She has a hunch back and a long face • Her face is rough and wrinkly like what today’s people would connect to what a witch looks like features • She has iron teeth and boney legs she also has two twin sisters who go be the same name • She does not were a hat, but she uses a broom
