Sacrament of Repentance and Confession Servants Preparation Class #11 November 20, 2012
When the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7) • The sacraments give LIFE to the church because the Holy Spirit is present.
Seven Sacraments • Baptism • Chrismation • Repentance & Confession • Eucharist • Marriage • Priesthood • Unction of the Sick
Seven Sacraments • Baptism • Chrismation • Repentance & Confession • Eucharist • Marriage • Priesthood • Unction of the Sick Four of these sacraments are essential for salvation.
What is sin? • New Testament writers used a Greek word for sin which is “hamartia.” Means: • missing the mark • off-target • wrong goal
What is our measuring stick? See Ephesians 4:13 • The measuring stick for us is not how well or poorly we keep the rules. The measuring stick is the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Broad Categories of Sin • Sin of commission involves doing, saying, thinking or feeling something we shouldn’t. • Sin of omission occurs when we fail to do, say, think or feel something we should. See James 4:17
Healing for Our Sickness • For the wages of sin is death. Romans 6:23 • “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.” Mark 2:17
What is repentance? The remedy for our sickness is repentance! Repentance is the primary preparation for the Kingdom. Repentance is not a feeling of regret but it is a lifestyle change. See 2 Corinthians 7:8-11
What is repentance? Repentance is salvation, freedom and joy. I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance. Luke 15:7 How to repent? Enter into the presence of God.
What is Confession? • Confession is admitting my sin to God in the presence of a priest and declaring my repentance so that I can receive absolution of my sin. • Example of Zacchaeus
Why confess? (See Genesis 3:9-11, Genesis 4:9-10) See Leviticus 5:1-6
Healing for Our Sickness “If impure thoughts trouble you, do not hide them, but tell them at once to your spiritual father and condemn them. The more a person conceals his thoughts, the more they multiply and gain strength. But an evil thought, when revealed, is immediately destroyed. If you hide things, they have great power over you, but if you could only speak of them before God, in the presence of another, then they will often wither away, and lose their power.”Sayings of Desert Fathers
Healing for Our Sickness St. Gregory of Nyssa said: “Regard the church priest as a spiritual father for you, reveal to him your secrets openly, just as a patient reveals his hidden wounds to the physician, and so is healed.” • “He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” Proverbs 28:13
Why a priest? • The Lord Jesus Christ gave authority to the Apostles and their successors. • See Matthew 18:18 and John 20:21,22
Repentance & Baptism Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:38 Repentance and confession = second baptism. Tears of repentance = waters of baptism
Conclusion See 1 John 1:8-10
