  2. Audience This lesson is designed for: • 4th-6th Graders • Middle class, suburban schools • Students that finish their in-class assignments early

  3. Environment • This lesson should be done individually • Students should have access to a computer with headphones or a space where noise will not bother others

  4. Objectives • Conditions: At a computer with headphones • Performance: Students will be able to recognize important American landmarks. Students will also improve their understanding of the history of each monument and how they relate to United States history • Criteria: Students should obtain at least an 80% on their quiz to show that they have mastered the material

  9. The White House Continued • The White House has been the home of every president since John Adams • The house had to be rebuilt after it was destroyed during the War of 1812 • The mansion is 6 stories has its own bowling alley, indoor swimming pool, and movie theatre Main Menu

  10. The Washington Monument • Location: Washington, D.C. • Dedicated: February 21, 1885 • Architect: Robert Mills Main Menu

  11. The Washington Monument Continued • The monument was built to commemorate the General George Washington • The obelisk statue is made of marble and granite • It is both the world’s tallest stone structure and the world’s tallest obelisk Main Menu

  12. The Statue of Liberty • Location: Liberty Island, NY • Dedicated: October 28, 1886 • Architect: Frederic Bartholdi Main Menu

  13. The Statue of Liberty Continued • The statue was a gift to the United States from France • The figure is the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas • She holds a torch and a tablet; a broken chain lies at her feet • The statue has become an iconic representation of freedom Main Menu

  14. The Lincoln Memorial • Location: Washington, D.C. • Dedicated: February 12, 1914 • Architect: Henry Bacon and Daniel Chester French Main Menu

The Lincoln Memorial Continued • The Memorial was built to honor President Abraham Lincoln • The building is in the style classical of Greek temples and contains a large, seated sculpture of Lincoln • The Memorial contains inscriptions of Lincoln’s two most famous speeches : The Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural Address Main Menu

  17. The Hollywood Sign • Location: Mount Lee, California • Dedicated: May 8, 1923 • Architect: Thomas Fisk Goff Main Menu

The Hollywood Sign Continued • The sign was originally created as an advertisement but has since become an American landmark • The letters of the sign are 45 feet tall and 350 feet long • The sign had to be restored in 1973. Nine private donors supplied the money to replace one letter each Main Menu

  19. Mount Rushmore • Location: Keystone, South Dakota • Dedicated: March 3, 1925 • Architect: Gutzon Borglum Main Menu

  20. Mount Rushmore Continued • Sculpture carved into granite • Features the heads of four former U.S. presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, and Lincoln • The memorial is over 5000 feet tall and over 1200 acres wide Main Menu

The Empire State Building Continued • The skyscraper is 102 stories and stands 1454 feet high • It is currently the tallest building in New York, the third tallest building in the United States and the 15th tallest in the world • Colored lights on the building change according to the season or special events Main Menu

  23. The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial • Location: St. Louis, Missouri • Dedicated: December 21, 1935 • Architect: Eero Saarinen Main Menu

  24. Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Continued • The stainless steel arch stands near the starting place of the Lewis and Clark Expedition • There is a tram inside of the arch so visitors can ride to the top and back down Main Menu

  25. Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Continued • The arch was created to commemorate three things: 1. The Louisiana Purchase 2. The first civil government west of the Mississippi River 3. The debate over slavery resulting from the Dred Scott case Main Menu
