  2. 莫內（Claude Monet）1840年生於巴黎，5歲時隨全家移居到法國西北部的港口城市勒阿弗爾（Le Havre），自幼年起，莫內就顯現非凡的繪畫才能，16歲時就已經可以賣畫賺錢，當時他的畫被貼在港口畫具店的門口，以每張20法郎的價格出售。 • 1859年，莫內回到巴黎，結識了三位志同道合的好朋友——雷諾阿、西斯萊和巴齊爾，以莫內為首，他們常常一起到楓丹白露的森林裡去寫生，他們共同創造了一種新的藝術手法，即在戶外和自然光線下用濃厚的油彩作畫。 • 一八七四年四月十五日，一群巴黎的畫家借用了攝影商那達爾的二樓，展出數年來一直被官方的「沙龍展」（Salon）排斥的165件作品，因莫內的作品「印象．日出」（Impression, Sunrise），被美術記者Louis Leroy譏為印象派，而這群畫家就以「印象派畫家」（Impressionists）自稱。 • 莫內有兩幅極具特色的巨幅肖像畫《綠衣女人》和《穿和服的女人》都是以一位名叫卡繆的女子為模特兒，1866年，莫內與年僅19歲的卡繆相愛並生活在一起，但他的父親卻反對他們的結合，並斷絕了對他的經濟支援，使得莫內的生活一度陷入絕境，同年，莫內完成了以卡繆為主角的《綠衣女人》，這幅用短短四天時間一氣呵成的作品，使莫內入選了1866年的「沙龍展」，並受到好評，直到1870年莫內30歲時，他才獲得父親的同意與卡繆正式結婚。
