  1. AS Computing Modes of use

  2. Learning objective • Describe the characteristics of different modes of computer system use: batch, real-time, on-line and off-line.

  3. On-line and off-line A computer that is part of a network can be either online or offline. If it is offline then it is physically connected to the network but not actually using the resources of the network. ‘online’ and ‘offline’ are terms usually associated with networks. They describe whether a computer or workstation is or isn’t using the resources available on a network.

  4. Real-time processing • The computer has to keep pace with some external operation, processing the data that it receives more or less instantaneously and producing immediate results. • For example • buying flight or train tickets online • Air traffic control system

  5. Batch processing Work is collected together and processed at the same time. Not all batch systems involve keying in data; for example, a bank produces bank statements every month for their customers. Batch processing is often carried out on mainframe computers, which are also being used for real-time processing.

  6. An example of batch processing A bank produces bank statements every month for their customers and a company produce pay slips for employees. It doesn’t make sense to do one million bank statements one at a time with an operator giving the computer instructions for each statement.

  7. Task 1 Do some research , and describe a different example where batch processing would be appropriate.
